Barcelona Champions League Exit: The Catalans Have Only Themselves To Blame

The Barcelona Champions League exit was confirmed despite the Catalans’ 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid on Tuesday, April 14. The Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona 1-2 loss meant that the Catalans extended their barren run in the competition that they last won in 2015.

Hansi Flick’s men are in a very good position to win the La Liga title, but the Barcelona Champions League exit will hurt them nevertheless. They finished both legs against Atletico Madrid with 10 men on the pitch and had only themselves to blame for that.

Barcelona Champions League Exit Analysed

As mentioned already, the Barcelona Champions League exit happened primarily because of their lack of professionalism, which saw Eric Garcia receive a red card on Tuesday.

Barcelona scored two goals to overcome the 0-2 deficit from the first leg of the Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona fixture, but Ademola Lookman scored to put Atletico ahead on aggregate yet again.

Lamine Yamal had a fascinating first half, pressing and running tirelessly, scoring a goal and playing at least a couple of delectable final passes in the process. However, he was guilty of trying a bit too much at times and held on to the ball for a bit too long on a number of occasions.

As expected, Atletico defended in numbers and also made vicious counter-attacks to upset Barca’s rhythm. Antoine Griezmann, who was not given much defensive responsibility, played a key forward pass to set Atletico free inside the Barca half and helped the home side score the crucial goal.

Still, the lack of a clinical approach and discipline in finishing was evident in the visitors’ attack in the Atletico Madrid vs Barceloa game. Fermin Lopez had a great chance to put his side 3-0 ahead, but failed to put the ball past Juan Musso, the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper, who was brilliant on the day.

On another occasion, Dani Olmo missed a glorious opportunity. For the last 10 minutes or so, defender Araujo played as a striker alongside Robert Lewandowski, as Barcelona played many crosses into the box in a desperate attempt to score.

Capitalising on the chances created and not taking the foot off the pedal were something that the Catalans failed to do. Thus, they were eliminated despite being the better team over the two legs. Not to mention, the fact that they played the last half an hour with a man short did not help them at all.

Winning La Liga Title Is the Incentive for Barca Now

Barcelona have won the La Liga title under Flick in the past, but adding another title will be certainly an incentive for them. After the Barcelona Champions League exit, the domestic league title should be the ultimate aim for them.

Barcelona lead Real Madrid by nine points with seven rounds of matches to go this season. The flair and skills are with them, but they will need some steadiness and discipline to put mind over matter and win the La Liga title.

The loss to Atletico will hurt, but the Catalan giants can definitely make amends by winning an important piece of silverware. The likes of Yamal and Pedri definitely deserve to have a winner’s medal, with the kind of skills and ability they have.
