The Xavi Simons performance against Brighton & Hove Albion was something that Tottenham Hotspur supporters will cherish. An injury-time goal enabled Brighton to snatch a 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, April 18.
The Xavi Simons performance deserved three points, but because of an erratic defence, Tottenham had to split the points with Brighton. Spurs now have 31 points from 33 matches and are 18th in the Premier League table, thereby firmly staring at relegation.
Xavi Simons Performance Demonstrated What He Is Capable Of
Simons had a goal and an assist in the Tottenham vs Brighton game. The 22-year-old Dutchman has now scored five goals and registered six assists in 40 matches for Tottenham this season.
Those are definitely not staggeringly high numbers, but it means that the Dutchman has done his fair bit in what has been a disappointing season for Spurs. He has shown flashes of his brilliance while playing in formations, which have often put him in unusual playing positions.
Simons started on the left flank against Brighton and Kolo Muani on the right, which meant that two essentially central players were playing out wide. Simons kept moving inside frequently to get very close to Conor Gallagher, who was playing as the No.10 in a 4-2-3-1, which was again not his normal playing position.
Dominic Solanke, the No.9 of Tottenham, moved to the left flank to get the ball and then play it to Simons, who closed the ball perfectly from the inside-left channel for the hosts’ first goal in the Tottenham vs Brighton game. Simons scored his goal with a scorching shot from the inside-left channel again, as he was comfortable playing in that area.
Even in the case of the second goal, Lucas Bergvall pressed intensely to win the ball before playing it to Simons. It once again showed that Simons thrived with a little support beside him.
On another occasion, Simons ran into the box through the channel to receive a pass and hit the post with a subsequent shot. Had the ball gone in, it would have given the home side a 2-0 win.
The Dutchman, however, found it difficult to cover the wide left area in terms of falling back while Brighton were having possession. This was quite natural, as Simons is not a specialist left-winger. Whenever he had assistance in that area, he looked dangerous by displaying his creativity to the fullest extent.
The Xavi Simons performance in the Tottenham vs Brighton clash showed that Spurs have made the right decision in signing him at the start of the season. Tottenham are going through a tough phase and run the risk of an unprecedented relegation, but the Dutchman demonstrated that there is quality in the Tottenham squad.

What’s Next for Tottenham?
Spurs will next visit Wolves next and play against Aston Villa away thereafter. Villa are in contention for a top-four finish and will be eager to earn three points from the Tottenham match.
It will be up to Roberto de Zerbi’s men to ensure that they manage to earn at least a draw in that match, as every single point is valuable for them at this stage of the season.
However, the Xavi Simons performance was once again a reminder of the fact that his club belong with the big boys in the Premier League. De Zerbi will make the necessary adjustments to his set-up and will hope that Simons is free to express himself fully on the pitch, just as he did against Brighton.
