The Mykhailo Mudryk ban has been lifted, handing Chelsea back their winger who is now free to play football again after a long-running case.
The Football Association confirmed on Friday that anti-doping proceedings against the 25-year-old have ended with the agreement of the World Anti-Doping Agency, allowing him to return with immediate effect.
Mudryk Ban Lifted
Mudryk had not featured for Chelsea since November 2024.
An out-of-competition test on October 22, 2024, while he was on international duty with Ukraine, detected a low concentration of meldonium, a prohibited substance that can aid stamina and respiratory capacity.
The FA notified him on December 4, 2024 and imposed a provisional suspension. He was formally charged in May 2025.
A hearing in January 2026 before an independent Regulatory Commission found he had committed anti-doping rule violations and handed him a four-year ban, the maximum available. Mudryk appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Changes to a WADA technical document on meldonium thresholds then altered the picture.
Those updates are not retroactive, but the FA stated that if Mudryk’s sample had been collected under the new rules, the low concentration would not have been reported and no violation would have followed.
With WADA’s agreement, the parties settled the appeal. Mudryk accepted he had committed the violations and agreed to a period of ineligibility equal only to the time already served.
The Mudryk ban therefore ended on the date of the agreement.
Mudryk Breaks Silence
In an Instagram statement, Mudryk said:
“After a long battle, the four-year ban that was imposed on me has been rescinded, and I am free to resume my career with immediate effect.
“I am grateful that this process has reached a conclusion, that I have been cleared to return to football and that I can now look ahead to my future. This has been the most difficult period of my career.
“As I have always maintained from the outset of this case, I have never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance.”
He thanked his family, friends, Chelsea staff, teammates, supporters and legal team, and said his focus is now on working hard and contributing on the pitch.
Chelsea confirmed they look forward to helping him return to full fitness, rejoin the squad and get back on the pitch. He is expected to link up with the squad on the club’s pre-season tour in Hong Kong.
How the Mudryk Ban Reached Resolution
The FA’s statement laid out the timeline clearly. The original finding involved a low concentration of meldonium.
After the commission imposed the four-year sanction, the subsequent technical-document change and other circumstances of the case allowed a settlement under the World Anti-Doping Code.
Mudryk remains recorded as having committed the violations, but the practical effect of the Mudryk ban is over. He can train and play straight away.

Impact on Mudryk and Chelsea
The resolution of the Mudryk ban ends nearly 20 months of uncertainty for a player signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial €70 million in January 2023.
At the time of his last appearance, he was still establishing himself in the Premier League. The lengthy absence has cost him valuable development time, match sharpness and momentum.
Returning now, with pre-season underway, gives him a chance to rebuild fitness and compete for minutes under the current coaching staff before the new campaign.
For Chelsea, the ending of the Mudryk ban removes a long-standing off-field distraction. The club has continued without him, but the high transfer fee and his potential as a wide attacker mean a fully available Mudryk adds depth and options.
Supporters who stood by him throughout will welcome the news, though many will also note the caution that must accompany any return after such a prolonged layoff.
