Manchester City’s 2026/27 season is going to present them with the opportunity of winning the Premier League title after two seasons.
The Cityzens have missed out on the league title in each of the last two seasons, and many believe that Pep Guardiola’s inability to win the title for the second successive season led to his departure from the club.
Enzo Maresca, the manager for Manchester City’s 2026/27 season, has managed Chelsea in the past, but had an acrimonious departure from the club. He will hope that he will have a much nicer stay at Manchester City, but might end up facing two serious challenges.
#1. Following in the Giant Footsteps of Pep Guardiola
Guardiola won 20 trophies in 10 seasons at Manchester City, which is simply an awesome record whichever way one looks at it. Guardiola won six Premier League titles and never finished below the top three. He also won three FA Cups and a UEFA Champions League, which was Manchester City’s first ever.
As was the case with David Moyes, who followed Sir Alex Ferguson into the Manchester United managerial role and found the demands to be too high, so might be the one with Maresca, who has a very tough act to follow. Judging a new manager by the yardstick of Guardiola is not fair on the former, but a number of Manchester City supporters might do precisely the same with Maresca next season.
The 46-year-old Italian cannot afford to be weighed down by the pressure of expectations and comparisons, but will know too well that it is something that comes with the package.
On the brighter side, he should be happy to inherit the strong squad Guardiola has left Manchester City with and which should make them one of the favourites to win the league title.

#2. Coping With a Midfield Rebuild in Manchester City’s 2026/27 Season
If Rodri leaves for either Real Madrid or Barcelona, it will be too big a hole to fill for the Cityzens.
Man City have already had to cope with the recent departures of Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan. They will have to do without the versatile Bernardo Silva next season, and if Rodri decides to leave as well, it might prove to be too much of an ask for Manchester City’s 2026/27 season.
Again, on the positive side, the Cityzens have Rayan Cherki, Elliot Anderson, Phil Foden, Mateo Kovacic and might have Ayoub Bouaddi, who impressed for Morocco at the recent World Cup. If Rodri stays, then they will have a pretty much complete team and will be the favourite to win the league title alongside Arsenal.
In the event of Rodri leaving, the challenge for Maresca will be to hold his midfield together and think out the proper combination for Manchester City’s 2026/27 season. It will be a really tough task, though.
Still, it will also give Maresca the authority to build from scratch again, and he will be able to do things his own way. It remains to be seen whether he can prove his worth for Manchester City’s 2026/27 season.
