Alexander Isak Injury Mars the Joy as Liverpool Continue Good Run

An Alexander Isak injury spoiled the fun for the Reds despite their 2-1 win in the Tottenham vs Liverpool Premier League game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, December 21. The Reds are now fifth in the Premier League table with 29 points from 17 matches.

Liverpool have now won three consecutive matches across all competitions. The Reds, however, suffered a setback as an Alexander Isak injury occurred while he scored the opening goal for them. Isak has gotten a fracture in his leg as per the latest reports, which is very bad news for his club.

Alexander Isak Injury

Isak, who scored his third goal for the Reds on Saturday in the Tottenham vs Liverpool match, limped off the field after being tackled by Micky van de Ven while taking the shot at the goal. It was a setback for the 26-year-old Swedish striker, who was introduced into the match in the second half, as Liverpool looked to press home a one-man advantage.

Xavi Simons’ red card in the first half presented Liverpool with the opportunity of taking right-back Conor Bradley off and switching Hugo Ekitike to the right flank in place of Dominik Szoboszlai. Isak then replaced Ekitike as the centre-forward.

The Swede scored from a pass from Florian Wirtz, who registered his first assist in Premier League football this season. He took the shot with his left foot first time to take time off Van de Ven, who tried to mark him. However, the subsequent Alexander Isak injury to his ankle following a tackle by Van de Ven spoiled the fun for the Reds, who will hope that it is not something serious. The Swede seemed to be in severe pain, but still managed to stand up on his feet.

Liverpool will take heart from the fact that Jeremie Frimpong, who replaced Isak, played an important part in their second goal, as his cross from the right got deflected off a defender before Ekitike headed the ball in to score his 11th goal of the season.

Slot’s Next Three Games

The Reds will take on Wolves, Leeds United and Fulham in their next three Premier League matches before they square off with Arsenal on January 9. Arne Slot’s men will hope that they are able to collect nine points from those three matches to reduce the gap with Arsenal, which is 10 points at the moment.

Should they be able to do that, they will have a chance of reducing it further by beating Arsenal outright. However, Slot should not look too far ahead and only concentrate on one match at a time.

However, the Alexander Isak injury might peg them back further in the Premier League title race. Liverpool signed Isak for a British record transfer fee of £120 million, but have not reaped the rewards of the same. Isak has been benched often and has not looked nearly as impressive as he did for his previous club, Newcastle United. Liverpool need him to fire if they are to close in on the gap with Arsenal and Manchester City.

Now, it remains to be seen if he is going to be sidelined for long. As of now, the situation looks a bit bleak for the English champions, whose Premier League title defence keeps facing obstacles one after another.
