The Aston Villa vs Manchester City clash saw the Cityzens’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season come to an end. The Cityzens lost 2-1, as two Nicolas Jackson goals secured the Villans a valuable three points against the league leaders and handed them their first loss of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Aston Villa vs Manchester City: Three Reasons Behind The Cityzens’ Loss

1. Defensive Lapses

Both goals conceded by the Cityzens in the Aston Villa vs Manchester City clash can be attributed to defensive lapses. Marc Guehi failed to close down Nicolas Jackson properly and allowed the latter to go past him and finish with ease. Gianluigi Donnarumma was even more culpable for the second goal than Guehi was for the first, as the Italian goalkeeper basically allowed Jackson’s shot to go straight over him. On another day, Donnarumma would have stopped the shot definitely.

2. Lack Of Crosses From Full-backs

Enzo Maresca played Josko Gvardiol and Abdukodir Khusanov as the two full-backs in the first half. Both of them failed to deliver enough crosses into the opposition penalty box. In the second half, when Rico Lewis came on, the Englishman and Gvardiol looked more comfortable running in through the inside channel, but failed to deliver the ball into the penalty box.

In fact, in the absence of Matheus Nunes and Nico O’Reilly, the Cityzens have not got enough width in their attack. Their second-choice full-backs are not capable enough in terms of making overlapping runs and playing crosses and prefer to make underlaps instead. Some quality crossing by the full-backs was needed against an Aston Villa side playing off a low block for the majority of the match.

3. Poor Deliveries By The Wingers

Jeremy Doku and Ryan McAidoo played quite a few crosses into the box, but their deliveries lacked quality mostly. When he came on, McAidoo looked good with his dribbles and managed to go near the byline, but his crossing left a lot to be desired. Iliman Ndiaye, who was substituted in the second half, failed to impress, which saw McAidoo introduced.

Doku was a bit better with his crosses, but they were nowhere near as good as they should have been. The Belgian winger prefers to play the pass with his right foot, quite naturally, being a right-footed player. Hence, his crosses in the Aston Villa vs Manchester City match from the wide areas with his left foot obviously lacked the quality.

Extra Time Notes

In the Aston Villa vs Manchester City clash, it was the Cityzens’ first loss in the Premier League, and it will come as a shock to Enzo Maresca and his team. The Cityzens are facing an ordeal in terms of being found guilty of FFP charges and can only do their bit to ensure that things are done properly on the pitch at least. The Aston Villa vs Manchester City game certainly did not go how the Cityzens envisaged it to, and it will do a lot to hurt their confidence.

With their unbeaten record in the Premier League gone, the Cityzens will look to make amends in their next Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, October 31. They face the same opposition at the Carabao Cup two days before, and it should be two tough matches against a dangerous side for the Cityzens. As the Aston Villa vs Manchester City showed, there is room for improvement, and Maresca should keep that in mind.
