Atlanta United Wins Back-to-Back Matches, Eyes Postseason Revival

Atlanta United has had a less-than-ideal season due to its scoring struggles, which have led to a winless streak that extended for multiple weeks. Through this winless streak, it was believed that their season was pretty much over.

An uninspired attack, an unorganized defense, and failed attempts in the final third led to Atlanta being a bottom-feeder in the league. A once-proud club with an entire region supporting them.

Atlanta has made the game of soccer more accessible to the youth and has become one of the most famous teams in the city of Atlanta.

There are a lot of eyes on Atlanta United from sports fans in the area, as they are expected to compete and be at the top of the standings. With a loyal fan base behind them as well as high expectations, it has made everything behind this season louder than what most clubs go through.

These past two wins have shown bright spots for the club; if they can maintain some momentum, they might be able to sneak into the playoff picture.

Staying in games

Atlanta isn’t getting blown out; most of their losses came from a lack of offense or a bad break in a defense. This isn’t something that can’t be fixed for clubs with tons of talent on their side.

A player that stood out for United is goalkeeper Brad Guzan, the 40-year-old American is a veteran in the MLS and is one of the most respected players in the league. Guzan, despite giving up two goals, has held strong as his team has made late runs in the past two wins.

All you want from a goalkeeper is to give you a chance late in games, a big save can turn into a counter or a long offensive possession.

Guzan has become more of a punch line thanks to his old age and never truly breaking through the USMNT as a true number one option. Atlanta today is grateful for the veteran keeper; his recent performances could spark extra life for Atlanta.

Coming up Big Late in Games

The past two victories came down to a second-half goal in a moment of brilliance against a top Eastern Conference opponent. Cincinnati FC is a top-end Eastern Conference opponent for Atlanta.

Fans on both ends expected a Cincinnati win, no matter the fight that Atlanta put up. Those who expected that would have been shocked when seeing Atlanta take a two-goal lead in extra time to get their first win in weeks.

A 66-minute goal from Bartosz Slisz put a win right in the headlights of Atlanta United; all they needed to do was find a way to seal it. For the first time in weeks, Atlanta pulled it off to the surprise of many across the league.

It was a short turnaround from Saturday’s win to the Wednesday slate of games against another top contender in the East, Orlando City, who has proven to be the real deal since beating Miami weeks ago.

Atlanta fell to a disadvantage early against Orlando, going down 2-1 at a disadvantage starting the second half.

In the 77th minute, a red card was handed to Orlando City’s Cesar Araujo, which shifted momentum to Atlanta for the first time this match. Atlanta equalized the match shortly after, and the game appeared it would be sent into a draw until Atlanta struck a hint of brilliance in the final third to win the game.

As Atlanta sputtered around the net trying to find a clear shot, they found the goal in front of the net. Jamal Thiare found himself with the goalie dropping to the ground and a small chip shot away from being the hero the club needed.

Two extra time goals in two games have been the story for this club; it may not be sustainable, but in this moment, it has made many believers in Atlanta United for the first time this season.
