The historic Bayern Munich winning streak to start the season came to an abrupt end as the Bavarians were held to a 2-2 draw in the Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich game on Saturday, November 8. The question after such a fantastic beginning to the term is, how will its end affect the team?
Bayern Munich Winning Streak Halted, What’s Next for Vincent Kompany’s Men?
Given that sport in general and football in particular have such a big psychological component to them, that is a valid question, as strange as it may sound.
For that reason, it may be a good thing that the players are now with their national teams, seeing other things in different environments, rather than having to dwell on the bad performance and disappointing result in Berlin last weekend.
It may even be beneficial in the long run that the reigning Bundesliga champions struggled in the Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich game in the league, because they face them again in the Round of 16 of the German Cup in early December, also away.
It was a good reminder for them of how difficult it is to play there. The Stadion an der Alten Försterei is small and compact, but the atmosphere is very hostile to any visiting side, as the fans sing their songs for virtually 90 minutes, regardless of the result on the field.
It is better to drop two points in the Bundesliga there and to learn your lesson than to get ousted from the DFB Cup, as the latter scenario would be irreversible for the season.
Perhaps Some Arrogance Creeping In
After their 2-1 triumph over PSG, they may have been a little too careless about the league Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich clash, as they had complete control over the defending Champions League winners in the first half.
There were many more scoring chances for the Bavarians, besides Luis Diaz’s brace in the first half. Ironically, it was the Colombian international’s sending off just before the break that caused the Parisians to almost level the score in the end.

The Two Sides to Luis Diaz’s Performances
As good as Diaz has been at Bayern, his performances in Paris and Berlin were also microcosms of his overall season so far. In the first game in question, he scored twice before getting himself sent off for a reckless challenge from behind.
Against Union, he skillfully saved the ball from going out for a goal kick before scoring a stunner from an impossible angle. But minutes later, he missed a sitter from close range, which would have given his team a 2-1 lead at the time.
Yet, the former Liverpool man is by no means the only one in the side who has performed both fantastically and, at times, much less so, but he is the most drastic example of that type of fluctuation, which caused the end of the Bayern Munich winning streak.
Final Thoughts
Despite all of the imperfections in Bayern’s season so far, though, they have clearly set the foundation for a possibly remarkable 2025 /26 term in these opening 17 games, which they now must build on.
Vincent Kompany and his staff will certainly do well to continue to keep the players focused on the tasks at hand, and away from the sometimes-hysterical media reaction to their play. The fact that the Bayern Munich winning streak is now over may make that easier.
