The Bruno Fernandes assists tally is a very impressive 19 in the Premier League this season. He is one short of Kevin de Bruyne and Thierry Henry’s record of 20 assists in a single Premier League season.

Naturally, it has sparked a debate as to whether the Bruno Fernandes assists tally should help him win the Premier League Player of the Season award this season. However, it might not be that straightforward for the Portuguese No.10.

Behind Bruno Fernandes Assists This Season

The Bruno Fernandes assists tally has been helped by the fact that Manchester United were out of both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup quite early and have not played European football this season. As a result, Fernandes has been relatively fresh, and that has enabled him to channel all his energy and focus on the Premier League.

Fernandes has played in only 33 matches this season, which means that he will not get to the milestone of 40 matches. In comparison, players like Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Erling Haaland have already played 50 matches or thereabouts. Those players have obviously had a busier season than Fernandes.

Fernandes has played as the No.10 since Michael Carrick took over the reins at the club a few months ago. The Portuguese is the only genuinely creative midfielder that United have, and this means that he has had the freedom to play his crosses and passes without having to bother about his defensive responsibility.

The Bruno Fernandes assists tally is a fair reflection of his ability as a No.10. However, if one compares his performance with that of Haaland, for example, one sees that the Norwegian has already helped his side win the EFL Cup and reach the final of the FA Cup.

Moreover, Manchester City are in a close title race with Arsenal in the Premier League as well. Should Haaland help his side win a domestic treble, he should be a genuine contender to win the Premier League Player of the Season.

The No.9 is a few goals short of the commendable milestone of 40 goals this season, and should he be able to reach that, there is no reason why he should not win the award. Bernardo Silva and Declan Rice should also be in contention, but, Bernardo was substandard in the first half of the season, and Rice has been so in the second.

Fernandes’ Efforts in United’s Top Four Push

United are favourites to finish inside the top four this season, doing so will mean that they play in the Champions League next season. Fernandes has undoubtedly played a key role in it.

However, his team’s performance across all competitions has been quite ordinary when compared with that of Manchester City and Arsenal.

That is why I believe that the Bruno Fernandes assists tally should not be enough to win him the Premier League Player of the Season award, even if he crosses the mark of 20. He should be in the reckoning without any doubt, but, ultimately, anyone from among Haaland, Rice and Bernardo should win it in the end.
