The Cole Palmer England squad omission has come as a major setback for the 24-year-old Englishman with the Chelsea player having missed the chance to play in his first World Cup.

Palmer played in the 2024 Euros after he had a breakthrough 2023/24 season. However, the Cole Palmer England squad omission has now thrown his career somewhat off track.

Cole Palmer England Squad Omission: A Result of Intense Competition for the England No.10 Position

The Cole Palmer England squad omission was a result of intense competition for the role of the England No. 10.

Morgan Rogers, Jude Bellingham and Eberechi Eze have already been selected for the England No.10 spot, leaving Palmer and Phil Foden out.

However, it cannot be denied that both Palmer and Foden have had underwhelming seasons. Each of Rogers, Bellingham and Eze has more credentials as the England No.10 at the moment, and that has merely been reflected in the World Cup squad selection.

Palmer can play as a right-winger as well, but Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke’s presence on the right means that the competition there is no less either. As a result, the Cole Palmer England squad omission materialised in the end.

Palmer Has Had a Single Outstanding Season So Far

Palmer caught the eyes and grabbed the headlines in the 2023/24 season after joining Chelsea from Manchester City. He scored 25 goals in 45 matches that season and was one of the best players in England.

However, in the following season, he managed to score only 18 goals in 52 matches. In the current season, he has been plagued by injuries and has scored 10 goals in 33 matches. Overall, the Englishman has 53 goals in 130 matches for Chelsea, which is not bad for a No.10, but not as impressive as it seemed after the 2023/24 season.

However, it is the number of assists that has seen a sharp decline this season for Palmer. Palmer had 15 assists in the 2023/24 season and 14 in 2024/25, but has had only three assists in the current season.

Palmer is a very skilful player and has a wonderful left foot. However, he seems to be going through the motions at times and is not often intense enough. His touches and passes carry a lot of aesthetic appeal, but they are often not as probing and as incisive as they should be.

As a result, Palmer has often failed to break through resolute defences. Unless there is more intensity and forcefulness in his game, it will be difficult for him to make his mark as one of the elite No.10s in the game.

Each of Rogers, Bellingham and Eze is a better physical specimen than Palmer. That means that the Chelsea player will have to improve his physical aspects in order to become more dangerous for the opposition defence.

Palmer, who has 14 international caps for England, will definitely get more opportunities in international football in future. However, as the Cole Palmer England squad omission suggests, he might have to improve himself as a player for that.
