It was a dream start for Steven Gerrard as he won his first game in charge of Aston Villa against Brighton at Villa Park. Goals from Watkins and Mings secured the three points for Gerrard’s side.
Dream Start For Steven Gerrard As Aston Villa Manager
Recent Form
Before Gerrard took over Aston Villa, they were struggling to pick up any points. They failed to win a single point in their last five games under former manager Dean Smith and their last win was in September against Manchester United. Gerrard was appointed as a result of the poor form and he had a perfect first game against Brighton.
Aston Villa vs Brighton
On November 20th, Steven Gerrard managed his first game as Aston Villa boss. Despite the fixture taking place at Villa Park, Brighton dominated the majority of the game and were definitely the better team, especially in the first half. The Seagulls had some great chances and could’ve had a couple of goals if not for Emiliano Martinez. However, Villa looked dangerous on the counter attack and this is how they took the lead.
Ashley Young was substituted on in the 74th minute and ten minutes later, he assisted Villa’s first goal. His through ball to Ollie Watkins opened the scoring. Villa’s second goal came just 5 minutes later. Webster’s clearance fell straight to Villa captain Tyrone Mings who fired it into the back of the net.
Looking Ahead
Aston Villa will now prepare to face Crystal Palace on November 27th which won’t be an easy fixture by any means. However, the real challenge will pick up in December. Gerrard will have to prepare his side to face Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea in the space of four weeks. With such a tough fixture schedule coming up, Aston Villa fans will hope to see another win against Crytsal Palace to give them a stronger position on the table. It will be interesting to see where Villa stand come the new year.
