Gerrard’s arrival brought instant impact to the team that previously suffered five consecutive defeats. He won his first two games in charge, beating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 and Crystal Palace 2-1 and was nominated for Premier League Manager of the Month for November 2021. The 41-year old looked to strengthen his squad and he opted to sign his former Liverpool teammate Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona on a loan deal.

The 29-year old Brazilian did not disappoint as he scored a goal and provided an assist on his Aston Villa debut, having come on as a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United on 15 January 2022.

Having convinced Coutinho to join Aston Villa, Gerrard is looking to bring Luis Suarez, another former Liverpool teammate, to the club.

According to Gerrard Romero, the Atletico Madrid striker has rejected offers from Corinthians, Atletico Mineiro and Palmeiras- three clubs based in Brazil, in order to concentrate on Aston Villa’s offer, as he seeks to reunite with Steven Gerrard.

Suarez, whose contract with Atletico Madrid is due to expire by the end of the 2021/22 season, has reportedly spoken with Gerrard over the possibility of the transfer- and considerations are being made.

Suarez joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2020 and in his first season at the club, helped them win their first La Liga title in seven years. However, the 34-year old Uruguayan striker has struggled in the 2021/22 season, as he has failed to score in his last ten games.

He played alongside Gerrard and Coutinho at Liverpool before leaving for Barcelona in 2014 and there is a possibility that he will reunite with his former teammates at Aston Villa.
