The Germany 2026 World Cup campaign kicks off on Sunday, June 14, with a match against Curacao in their group.
While that match might not be a great hurdle for the four-time world champions, getting off to a good start will mean a lot for the Germany 2026 World Cup campaign, given their disappointing performances in the last two World Cups.
Germany, traditionally the most consistent team in major international tournaments, failed to qualify from their group in each of the last two World Cups. Defeats against the likes of Mexico, South Korea and Japan occurred, much to the people’s disappointment.
Germany 2026 World Cup Campaign: The Germans Looking To Get Out Of The Group Stages This Time Around
Julian Nagelsmann oversaw a good European Championships campaign on home soil in 2024, where Germany lost to eventual champions Spain in the quarter-finals, in what was probably the best match of the tournament.
He should do a better job than Joachim Low, who suffered because of wrong decisions in the last two World Cups. He did not guard against speedy counter-attacks well enough and committed the folly of playing Timo Werner in the number nine role.
Werner has scored a strictly average 24 goals in 57 matches for Germany, and ironically, his numbers are a great deal similar to Kai Havertz’s for Die Mannschaft.
This may be a warning for Nagelsmann, who should think twice before playing Havertz, who has scored 22 goals in 58 matches as Germany’s number nine.
Admittedly, Havertz has a good aerial presence and also scored with a header against the United States recently, but that is simply not enough.

The lack of a potent goal-scorer should be a major problem in the Germany 2026 World Cup campaign.
Havertz is not prolific enough, and Nick Woltemade is not experienced enough at the international level. That means Deniz Undav should be getting the nod ahead of both of them.
Germany will also have to deal with the retirement of Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan in their midfield.
However, the likes of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz have matured enough to take the responsibility, and they also have the experienced Leon Goretzka.
The speedy and tricky Leroy Sane should also be there on the right flank to provide some serious speed from wide areas.
The German defence is not bad, with Jonathan Tah and Nico Schlotterbeck playing as the two centre-backs. Joshua Kimmich provides a lot of experience as the right-back, and his deliveries to tall attackers like Havertz and Woltemade might prove to be a crucial component in Germany’s attack.
Then, there is the veteran Manuel Neuer, who is going to feature in his fifth World Cup in North America. He will have fond memories of the Americas, with the World Cup winning campaign in 2014 happening in Brazil.
Neuer was an outstanding player in that tournament and has won two UEFA Champions League titles with Bayern. Nagelsmann’s job will be to strike a perfect balance in the Germany 2026 World Cup campaign squad with the correct mix of youth and experience. The goal-scoring woes should be the priority in his mind, and its importance cannot be overemphasised.
However, a good thing for the Germans will be that there will not be too much pressure of expectation on them this time around. It remains to be seen whether the Germany 2026 World Cup campaign ends in success and if Die Mannschaft can qualify for the knockout stages again.
