Bayern Munich are comfortably leading the Bundesliga table with 26 points from 10 matches at the moment. They are five points ahead of the second-placed RB Leipzig and nine points in front of the defending champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayern failed to win the Bundesliga last season for the first time in more than a decade. Leverkusen won their first league title under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso, thereby making him one of the most sought-after managers in European football. They also finished runners-up in UEFA Europa League.
Florian Wirtz has been excelling for club and country alike
One of the chief architects of Leverkusen’s domestic double last season was Florian Wirtz, who scored 18 goals in 49 matches. Wirtz has started the current season on a high as well, having notched up seven goals and two assists in 17 matches already.
Wirtz is an attacking midfielder who primarily plays as the left winger for Germany. With the talented Jamal Musiala by his side for the national team, Wirtz has tormented many an opposition during the last couple of years and has scored six goals in 28 matches for Die Mannschaft so far.
At the moment, there are not too many wingers in European football who are better than the 21-year-old German youngster. Hence, quite expectedly, Bayern seem to be keen on signing him in the upcoming January Transfer Window. Real Madrid, the world’s most successful club, are also reportedly after him and seemingly want to sign him before the start of the next season.
The offers might be too big for Wirtz to resist
Almost every youngster dreams of playing for the elite clubs of the world and Wirtz should be no exception. Should Real or Bayern officially approach him, the offers could be too big to resist for the young man.
He has already won silverware with a smaller club like Leverkusen and hence, should aspire to achieve more in a long career that lies in front of him. Bayern Munich already have adept wingers like Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané in their team and signing Wirtz will mean that the latter will have to face stiff competition to make it to the starting XI.
The same goes for star-studded Real Madrid, who have Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo in their team already. However, it should also provide Wirtz an opportunity to improve himself as a player by alongside the top players in the world at the moment.
For the national team, the young German winger should be central to their plans for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2026. Wirtz impressed at the European Championships on home soil last summer, as Germany lost narrowly to Spain in the quarterfinals after having given the eventual champions a run for their money. Wirtz was one of the best players for Germany in the tournament.
It remains to be seen whether Wirtz moves to a bigger club before the start of the next season. However, he is almost certain to have a very good career ahead of him either way.
