The Aston Villa Europa League title has many repercussions, but it’s not often that you’ll find Premier League teams rooting for a squad currently taking the last Champions League spot.
With an eight-point gap to sixth, Aston Villa look set to do exactly that. However, what if, with an Aston Villa Europa League title, a top-five finish for the Villans would be the best-case scenario for half of the league?
Aston Villa Europa League Title: How Sixth In The Premier League Could Get A Place In The UEFA Champions League
The Premier League has already secured a fifth spot in the UEFA Champions League thanks to the UEFA club coefficients.
While the Villans currently occupy that spot, they are also in the running for the Europa League title. Should a Europa League title come to fruition, they would automatically secure UEFA Champions League qualification.
In that scenario, Villa would then have a UEFA Champions League spot secured, and the additional UEFA club coefficients spot would fall to the sixth-place team in the Premier League standings.
This would open the doors of top-flight European football to 11 teams. The gap between Brighton & Hove Albion, who currently hold that sixth spot, and Nottingham Forest in 16th is only 11 points.
Yes, some clubs have much better chances than others, but with a spot in the UEFA Champions League on the line, every club will be looking for top form during the run-in.
Aston Villa Europa League Title: Relegation-Battling Sides Still In With A Chance
For squads like Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, a chance at that sixth spot would be just about out of reach. To surmount not only Brighton, but every other team above them, seems next to impossible.
Anything can happen, but with both clubs in the midst of a relegation battle, their attention may be elsewhere. Not all hope is lost for Nottingham Forest, however, as they could ruin not only this article but anyone’s chance at that sixth spot by beating Aston Villa in the Europa League semi-final.
Above them, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace make up for some of the more interesting scenarios. While they both have a slightly better shot at that sixth Champions League spot, they also have an outside chance of being relegated.
While not likely, Newcastle has been in abysmal form, losing four of their last five. Crystal Palace, with a game in hand, could see themselves within four points of that sixth spot in the Premier League standings.
If they could put together a solid finish, it would be a marvellous result for a club that has played what most would consider bang-average football this season.

Aston Villa Europa League Title: The Favourites For Europe
Of all the clubs competing for that UEFA Champions League spot, the fan-favourite might be Sunderland.
Should Le Bris guide his side through promotion and a place in the UEFA Champions League the following season, the manager will have achieved nothing short of brilliance.
It’s an almost impossible feat that might just quash those sacking rumours that have been making their rounds.
Just like Sunderland, the three squads that sit above them in the table (Everton, Fulham, and Brentford) would all benefit massively from European football.
For Everton, there’d be no better way to christen the Hill Dickinson Stadium than with a few UEFA Champions League nights.
For Fulham, their first return to European competition since the 2011/12 Europa League campaign would mean the end of a competitive drought that has cost them international exposure.
For Brentford, the reward would mean most of all, as qualification would mark the club’s first appearance in European football. Being only two points out, it is incredibly realistic to think that Brentford could make club history this season.
They’re not the only ones who could make history. Bournemouth, who have gone unbeaten in their last 14 Premier League matches, could also see Europe for the first time in club history.
It would be an accolade that the Cherries, quite frankly, have earned. After a rough stretch in November and December, they were able to turn things around, sitting just one point below Brighton in that sixth spot.
Aston Villa Europa League Title: The Fight For UEFA Champions League That Will Go Down To The Wire
Although all of these squads would fight tooth and nail for that UEFA Champions League spot, none may be more desperate than Chelsea. Losing six of their last seven matches has sent them tumbling out of UEFA Champions League qualification.
For them, working their way back into that sixth spot would mean saving their season. Sure, they have the FA Cup final to look forward to later this month, but if you ask any fan, UEFA Champions League football is an expectation.
Without an Aston Villa Europa League title, only a few teams can retain hope of UEFA Champions League football – and it’d be a long shot.
A Villa title would shrink the gap substantially for those mid-table teams. Keep in mind that, while the focus is on sixth-place qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, it would also mean seventh and eighth place would play European football. For a lot of teams, that would still be a substantial result.
Premier League football can be unpredictable at times, perhaps now more than ever. However, with the prospect of Aston Villa lifting the Europa League trophy, one thing is for sure: we’re in for one heck of a run-in.
