John Stones’ exit from Manchester City will come at the end of the 2025/26 season.
Stones has been a great player for the Cityzens, but his current season has been plagued by injuries, featuring in only 16 matches for his club.
Pep Guardiola has already overseen a rebuild in Manchester City’s midfield and will have to do the same for the team’s defence as well, if he stays as their manager for another year or so.
John Stones’ exit from Manchester City is the first step towards that objective, with Nathan Ake likely to follow him soon.
John Stones’ Exit From Manchester City Comes After a Successful Decade
John Stones’ exit from Manchester City comes after a span of 10 years. Stones signed for the Cityzens back in 2016 from Everton. His decade-long stint at Manchester City has seen him amass 293 appearances for the club, scoring 19 goals in them.
Stones has primarily played as a central defender for the club. However, for a considerable period of time, he also featured as the hybrid right-back, who moved into the midfield to play as the holding midfielder, as the formation switched from a 4-2-3-1 to a 3-2-2-3.
The Cityzens won a couple of Premier League titles that way, with Stones playing a key role in it. Stones remains one of the best passers of the ball among all defenders in the Premier League.
His ability to read the game and create moves with commendable distribution, and his overall poise as a player are exceptional qualities to have.
However, with the arrival of Abdukodir Khusanov and Marc Guehi, the dynamics of the Manchester City back-line have changed. Stones finds it really difficult to make it to the starting XI of the Cityzens these days.

A Chapter’s Ending
John Stones has won six Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League title with the Cityzens. His journey at the club is as old as Pep Guardiola’s, and together they have achieved a lot for the club.
However, Stones will turn 32 soon and has left his best days as a footballer behind him. As a result, the Englishman has become redundant for the most successful team in England in recent times. He will, however, look to perform well for the English national team in this summer’s World Cup, which is quite probably going to be his last as a player.
Stones still manages to make it into the starting XI for England and has already earned 87 international caps for the Three Lions. However, he is yet to win an international trophy for his country despite coming close on a few occasions.
He will try to make amends for that in the United States this summer. However, the club’s supporters all over the world will be sad to see John Stones’ exit from Manchester City.
Stones will want to contribute in whatever way possible towards Manchester City winning the domestic treble. They are already in the FA Cup final, have won the EFL Cup and are in a tense Premier League title race alongside Arsenal. At the moment, John Stones’ exit from Manchester City should not be the foremost thing in Guardiola’s mind.
