The Viktor Gyokeres goal from a penalty earned Arsenal a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday, April 29, in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final. Arsenal will play the second leg at home, which will give them a slight advantage going into the match.
The Viktor Gyokeres goal came just before half-time, but Atletico managed to equalise in the second half to stand a strong chance of qualifying for the final. Julian Alvarez scored the only goal for the home side, also from a penalty.
The Viktor Gyokeres Goal Adds To Strong Tally
The penalty that led to the Viktor Gyokeres goal was earned by the striker himself. In the absence of Kai Havertz, Gyokeres did a good job as the No. 9 and kept the Atletico defenders busy throughout the Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal game.
Havertz’s ability to play passes in the final third makes him more apt for the role of a centre-forward in Arsenal’s set-up that requires the No.9 to connect well with the No.10 and the wingers.
In comparison, Gyokeres is a more conventional striker, who is more dangerous than Havertz inside the opposition penalty box, but cannot be trusted to perform the link-up play like the German.
The Viktor Gyokeres goal in the Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal UCL fixture took his season’s tally to 19 goals in 49 matches. Quite a few of those goals have come from penalties, but, should the Swede be able to surpass the milestone of 20 goals in his debut season in England, he should be reasonably happy about it.
Gyokeres is comfortably Arsenal’s highest goal-scorer of the season so far despite not starting for them often. As of now, he has scored five goals in 11 Champions League matches for the Gunners.
The Viktor Gyokeres goal against Atletico, however, is probably the most important one he has scored this season in the continental competition.

What’s Next for the Gunners?
The Gunners will face Fulham in a Premier League match at home on Saturday, May 2.
As of now, the Gunners lead Manchester City by three points, but the Cityzens have a match in hand. Winning against Fulham will allow them to go six points clear and will keep the pressure on Manchester City to win their subsequent matches.
Havertz, who was not in the squad for the Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal match, is unlikely to make a return to action anytime soon.
Hence, the onus will be on Gyokeres to provide his team with vital goals. It can be assumed that he will lead the line for Arsenal against Fulham on Saturday.
The Viktor Gyokeres goal against Atletico will give him a lot of confidence going into the match. The milestone of 20 goals will also be in front of him and he should be motivated enough to reach it and even exceed it by the end of the season.
Arsenal’s decision to buy a striker has proved to be quite a judicious one so far. However, a defeat to Atletico next week in the second leg or an inability to win the Fulham match is likely to seriously affect their season.
