Leagues Restart in June With a Flurry of Matches

Finally, the rest of the major European leagues will return in June. La Liga returns on June 11th, the Premier League resumes on June 17th, and Serie A restarts on June 20th. There will be plenty of football to watch—and given the longest mid-season drought in memory, fans are jubilant.

League Schedule

For the first few weeks, all four leagues will be going on simultaneously. La Liga plans to have a game everyday. This is because beIN Sports broadcasts their games and there are no schedule conflicts. The Premier League will have two games on June 17th Manchester City vs Arsenal and Aston Villa vs Sheffield United. These were some of the first games suspended because of Covid-19 back in March. The rest of the Premier League teams will play that weekend. Just before Serie A comes back, Coppa Italia will be finished. The semifinals will be played on June 13th and final on June 17th. Juventus plays AC Milan and Napoli squares off against Inter Milan. The Bundesliga title race is over and the season will conclude at the end of June. Bayern Munich has a 10 point lead in the standings.

Impact on Champions League

Assuming the Champions League starts in August, the time off will be apparent. Bayern Munich should be fine because they have a comfortable lead vs Chelsea. Robert Lewandowski will look to continue his Champions League tear. However, Leipzig has no idea who their opponent will be. There is a fear of rust, understandably. Meanwhile, the other leagues will finish up by July and could be a benefit come Champions League time. Although Bayern Munich has played masterfully, the time off could be their downfall. Meanwhile, Manchester City, Inter Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona could have an advantage—a short rest between the end of season and Champions League. Let’s see how it all plays out.
