Ruben Amorim made his team play with a 3-4-3, with Bruno Fernandes playing in the double-pivot alongside Casemiro.
Essentially, a number 10 and a 34-year-old were playing in the midfield, which meant that there were not enough players tracking back and venturing forward at the same time.
There simply were not the legs required for all of this in the midfield.
Carrick switched to a 4-2-3-1, with Fernandes moving to the role of a number 10 and Kobbie Mainoo, who was sidelined by Amorim, partnering Casemiro.
Hence, there was a spike in the number of assists provided by Fernandes, as the Portuguese’s record tally of 21 league assists this season contributed significantly towards the Manchester United recent success.
In addition to that, there were the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, each of whom reached double digits in terms of goals scored this season. Thus, the reinforcements the Red Devils made in their attack paid dividends handsomely.

Manchester United Recent Success: The Mentality Switch
In simple terms, Carrick has made United more adventurous.
One massive example of this is the game against Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Reds were the defending champions, and despite their underwhelming form this season, United had every reason to go into the match with a bit of caution.
However, Fernandes, Mbeumo and Sesko ran riot in the shape of a triangle that left the Liverpool defence in shambles during the initial 20 minutes.
United took a 2-0 lead quite early in the match, and despite Liverpool’s comeback in the second half, they were able to win it 3-2 following a Mainoo winner.
That is the change Carrick has been able to inculcate into the Red Devils. The team is not afraid to go for a win any longer, which should always be the case for a team that is one of the most successful clubs in England
United earned a very impressive 39 points in 17 matches in Carrick’s interim spell as manager. That tally is among the highest in the league, and the Manchester United recent success has been a thing of pride for their supporters.
However, the next season will be more challenging as it will consist of UEFA Champions League football, as the Red Devils gear up to return to Europe’s elite competition once more.
Carrick will need his bench to perform as well and might need a few reinforcements. It remains to be seen whether the Manchester United recent success can pave the way for a better 2026/27 season for them.
