The Red Devils took victory in the Manchester United vs Chelsea Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday, September 20, giving the hosts a lifeline.
United won the match 2-1, as Chelsea were reduced to 10 men in the 5th minute of the match, with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez being sent off. Their under-fire manager, Ruben Amorim, can now afford to relax a bit.
Manchester United were reduced to 10 men as well when Casemiro saw a second yellow in the dying minutes of the first half. However, they had secured a 2-0 lead by then, which proved to be decisive in the end.
A New Trait Comes to Fore in the Manchester United vs Chelsea Game
Ruben Amorim’s men justified their 3-4-2-1 formation with some quality crossing throughout the Manchester United vs Chelsea match. They utilised the width of the pitch really well with a flurry of crosses and diagonal balls.
Patrick Dorgu moved inside frequently and was on the receiving end of crosses played to him in case of both goals. It was refreshing to see the crossing doing its trick for the home side.
Noussair Mazraoui was very good once again as the right wing-back, putting a lot of pressure on Marc Cucurella. The Royal Blues switched to a 5-3-1 after the sending off of Robert Sanchez, taking Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and Estevao off.
Their midfielders dropped deep to help their defence against United’s attacks, which came the United midfielders enough scope to play forward passes freely from the middle third.
Bruno Fernandes made forays into the final third often and also scored United’s first goal with a header. It was his 100th goal for the Red Devils.
Casemiro then scored with another header following a corner to put United further ahead.
Benjamin Sesko impressed with his link-up play on the day on a soggy pitch amid torrential rain that required extra effort from the players to control the ball. It was Sesko who headed the ball down to Bryan Mbeumo from a long delivery, and then the latter was fouled by Sanchez, which led to his exit.
That incident changed the very complexion of the match.
After Casemiro’s exit, Amorim took Mazraoui off and shifted Amad Diallo to the right wing-back’s role. Manuel Ugarte came in for Sesko, as United, too, switched to a 5-3-1.
Chelsea were a lot more threatening after parity was restored in terms of personnel. They also managed to score once, but could not quite manage to equalise thereafter.

Manchester United Enter Top Half of the Table
The Manchester United win over Chelsea moved the Red Devils up to 10th position in the league table with the victory. They now have seven points from five matches, which is eight less than Liverpool’s tally.
Amorim’s men will take on Brentford next, having already faced Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in their first five fixtures. They should find their next few matches relatively easy, which should offer them some breathing space.
However, Amorim will have to keep in mind that a top-six finish is absolutely essential to keep him in his job. For a club of United’s stature, it is imperative that they qualify for European competitions.
Still, the win against Chelsea has definitely given their manager a lifeline.
