The Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match ended in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 10, as Spurs scored a last-minute equaliser to snatch a point. The draw in the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match left the Red Devils with six points from six matches, while Tottenham have three from six, having drawn each of their last three matches.
Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Were The Correct Players Chosen By Michael Carrick?
Leny Yoro started as the right-back in the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match on Saturday. He looked every bit of a centre-back playing as a full-back, as there were not enough overlapping runs from him. Amad Diallo started as the right-winger, as Bryan Mbeumo played as the number nine in Benjamin Sesko’s absence.
Diallo was reluctant to fall back to defend and stayed up most of the time in anticipation of a counter-attack. That meant that there was a lot of pressure on Yoro, and Savio and Destiny Udogie combined to attack through the left to put pressure on the 20-year-old right-back repeatedly. It was the Ivorian winger’s first appearance of the season for the Red Devils, and he certainly looked somewhat rusty.
Then, there was the decision to start Youri Tielemans yet again in the double pivot in the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match. There were gaping holes in the middle of the park for United, and Tottenham’s aggressive pressing caused them a lot of trouble. Had Dominic Solanke not been profligate and had the quality of crosses been better for the visitors, Tottenham would have scored in the first half itself.
Tielemans was often not there to help Kobbie Mainoo out in protecting the defence. Considering that the Belgian midfielder has a solitary assist and no goals in the seven matches he has played this season, it means that he is not much of a threat in attack either. Manchester United looked a better team when Carrick decided to introduce Carlos Baleba, Diogo Dalot and Joshua Zirkzee in the second half. Baleba played in his first match of the season, but brought in the energy and defensive assurance that is needed in the middle of the park.

Extra Time Notes
It does not take a genius to figure out that Carrick is under some pressure. Six points in six matches is nowhere near good enough, and at this rate, United will struggle to finish inside the top half, let alone the top four. A victory in the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match would have given the Red Devils some impetus, but it was not to be. Considering that Tottenham were the much better team in the first half, United might consider themselves to be lucky to finish the match with a point.
Hopefully, Baleba has done enough to earn himself a start in Manchester United’s next match. Diallo might still be given another chance, as the Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur match was his first of the season. However, the position of the right-back remains a concern, with Yoro not looking comfortable there and Dalot having been largely mediocre so far.
