The final years of Messi: Will he retire at FC Barcelona?

La Liga has started with a top of the table clash between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barcelona came out of the lockdown on top, but they have now dropped 4 points below Madrid. Barcelona’s performance in the last few games has been mediocre at best. This, along with shady transfer decisions made by the board just for business purposes, has made Barcelona feel like a very different club than they used to be. This has frustrated and angered Messi, calling him to take action.

The final years of Messi: Will he retire at FC Barcelona?

Lionel Messi’s frustration

Additionally, with the uncertainty of Barca’s manager’s future, the media was focusing on the causes behind Barca’s current form. A lot of this was directed at Lionel Messi, with him being the hot topic, and there were claims made that he was the real decision-maker, and had the most power in tactics.

This got him frustrated, and his anger was even amplified by reports allegedly being sourced from Barca’s own management. The combination of Barca’s poor form and disappointing management allegedly frustrated him.

Due to this, reports in the media found that he had halted his contract renewal talks, and his contract with Barcelona is ending in 2021.

Is he looking to change clubs?

Messi changing clubs is a very, very real situation. ESPN published articles revealed that he was very angry. Additionally, they have also written that Messi is ready to leave the club.

If Barcelona does not win a major title this year, or he is not satisfied with their performance, he would most likely leave FC Barcelona in 2021.

However, it is also possible that Messi halting contract talks is more of a power play. With Barcelona’s presidential elections coming up next year, he may be doing this to try and get someone other than Bartomeu elected.

Which clubs could likely host Messi?

There is almost no evidence about his transfer. However, some clubs could allegedly sign Messi. The likes of which are Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain, and Juventus FC.  A move to any of these clubs would be something unlike anything we’ve ever seen. A Messi, Ronaldo linkup now seems more plausible than ever.

However, it should be noted that these are nothing but rumours, and there is little information about which clubs he would consider joining.
