Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has signed a new contract with FC Barcelona that will keep him at the club until 2021. FC Barcelona confirmed the news on their official website and official social media accounts as well.

The contract was signed on Saturday morning with a buyout clause set at €700m. Messi has been with FC Barcelona for 13 years and by the time this deal ends, he will have spent 17 years with the Catalans.

He has been a key player for the side ever since he joined. Messi is widely regarded as the greatest of all time. The 30 year old played for the Barcelona C and B teams before he earned a first team call up.

Messi joined the first team in 2004 and the rest is history. He has conquered all sorts records since joining. He has won a countless team as well as individual trophies. The Argentine has racked up eight La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, five Copa del Reys, seven Spanish Super Cups, three European Super Cups, and three Club World Cups. His 30 titles are tied with club legend Andrés Iniesta for most in club history. Individually, he has won the Ballon d’Or award five times, more than any other player in the history of the game, four Pichichi awards as the top scorer in the Spanish First Division, and four Golden Shoes as the top domestic scorer in Europe.

He won his 4th Golden Shoe recently for finding the net 37 times in the La Liga 2016/17 in 34 games. He was given the award by his teammate Luis Suarez. Messi has scored 523 goals for FC Barcelona in 602 games. He is also the club’s, as well as La Liga’s all time leading goalscorer.

Messi has also got off to a flying start this season having scored 16 goals already in 19 games for FC Barcelona and leading both the title and golden boot race. Having signed this new contract, it is evident that the future looks bright for Messi and FC Barcelona.
