Napoli Are on the Cusp of Winning the Serie a Title

Both Napoli and Inter Milan drew their respective matches in Serie A last weekend against Parma and Lazio, respectively. As a result, Napoli still remain at the top with 79 points in 37 matches, while Inter have 78.

With the last matchday of the season falling on Friday, May 23, the title will be decided on the same day.

Napoli will face Cagliari on Sunday, while Inter will take on Como.

Should either of the teams win its match and the other one splits points or loses, the winning team will proceed to win the Serie A title. However, if the two teams have the same result, then the title will go to Napoli.

Napoli Have the Edge

Napoli will play their last match of the season at their home ground, the Diego Maradona Stadium, while Inter will travel to Como.

Moreover, Antonio Conte’s men are ahead of Simone Inzaghi’s by a point, which gives them the edge to win their fourth domestic league title.

Napoli won their last Serie A title in the 2022/23 season.

Their two previous Serie A titles came in the late 1980s, when the incomparable Diego Maradona led the side to memorable title triumphs fighting against the mighty triumvirate of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.

Arrigo Sachhi’s AC Milan were the best side in Europe in the late 1980s, which glorifies Napoli’s achievement even more.

However, as Maradona left the club in 1991, Napoli soon returned to obscurity yet again. They had to wait until 2023 to win their next Serie A title.

However, if they go on to win it again this year, it will make them the second-most dominating Italian club team in the recent past behind Inter Milan.

Napoli’s Best Players This Season

Scott McTominay, with 11 goals and four assists in 33 Serie A matches, deserves a special mention. He has proved Manchester United’s decision to let go of him completely wrong.

Romelu Lukaku, who has played for a plethora of clubs in the recent past, has scored 13 goals in 35 Serie A matches for Napoli this season.

However, Lukaku has won only a solitary Serie A title for Inter Milan so far and would definitely like to add to his collection.

Then, there are Italians like Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Matteo Politano, Leonardo Spinazzola and Giacomo Raspadori, who have each contributed to the club’s cause significantly so far.

Di Lorenzo has led the squad, which is not very expensive by today’s standards, with commendable conviction.

The 31-year-old Italian right-back is about to complete his sixth season at Napoli and it will be a special achievement for him to win the domestic title for the second time.

It remains to be seen whether he can hold the trophy aloft next Sunday.
