Newcastle United have been very busy in the January transfer window. The Magpies strengthened their attack with the arrival of former Burnley striker Chris Wood. They also spent £12m earlier in the window when they signed Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. They have spent more than any other club in the Premier League but still aim to make at least one more signing before the window closes. 21-year-old defender, Mitchel Bakker, is the most recent player linked with a move. The Dutch left-back left PSG for Bayer Leverkusen only six months ago for a fee of £8.5m. He signed a four-year deal with the German side so he won’t be cheap.
Newcastle United Set Their Sights On Mitchel Bakker
Who is Mitchel Bakker?
Mitchel Bakker is a young left-back who started his career in the Ajax academy. Despite being such a young player, he was trusted at PSG and made 26 league appearances for the French giants. He even made 10 appearances for PSG through their impressive Champions League campaign until they were knocked out by Manchester City.
Bakker is taller than your traditional full-back and would be a good aerial threat from set pieces. He is also a pacey player and likes running down the wing and at the opposition’s defence. After 15 appearances this season for Leverkusen, he has contributed to four goals.
Newcastle Building A Stronger Defence
It is clear that Eddie Howe believes that Newcastle’s defence is where the issues lie for the club. The side have conceded 43 goals this season which is more than two a game. Only Norwich have conceded more. After signing Kieran Trippier, Newcastle continued their search for more defenders. Although Bakker is the most recent one, Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos has also been heavily linked with the Magpies. Sevilla have only conceded 13 goals all season in La Liga and Carlos has played a huge part in that. If Howe manages to sign even one of these defenders, it would massively help Newcastle’s leaky defence.
