Another Real Madrid trophyless season is about to come to an end; however, this season will be the club’s second successive one without a trophy, and it hurts even more to know that their arch-rivals, Barcelona, have won the La Liga title in each of those seasons.
Los Blancos also failed to reach the Champions League semi-finals, losing to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.
Losing to the Bavarians over two legs is nothing to be ashamed of, but what will keep the Real Madrid supporters worried is that Bayern looked the better team for the majority of the tie.
Thus, the Real Madrid trophyless season calls for some scrutiny. We will discuss three reasons behind another season without a trophy for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid Trophyless Season: No Proper Right Winger
For the majority of the season, Real Madrid played without a proper winger on the right side of the pitch.
Rodrygo has played in only 27 matches this season, scoring three goals in them. Arda Guler has played a lot more often, but has mostly played in the centre of midfield, and the Real Madrid trophyless season was brought about by a lack of a proper right-winger.
Brahim Diaz, essentially a central attacking midfielder, has played on the right flank at times. However, his performance has been nothing extraordinary, and he has scored only seven goals in 45 matches for Los Blancos.
As a result, Real Madrid have relied more on their attacks going through the left and inside-left involving Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Guler.
Real Madrid Trophyless Season: A Few Key Injury Issues
There have been a few key injury problems for Real Madrid this season.
Jude Bellingham has been one of the primary victims and has played in only 37 matches so far this season, with a lot of them coming as a substitute. Rodrygo has been injured as well and failed to contribute for a large part of the season.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid’s summer acquisition from Liverpool, has suffered an injury as well and featured in only 28 matches this season. Federico Valverde filled in for him at times, which was not an ideal scenario for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid Trophyless Season: Change Of Manager Midway Through The Season
Real Madrid had appointed Xabi Alonso, a former Real Madrid player himself, at the start of the season.
The Spaniard came with the great achievement of winning the Bundesliga unbeaten with Bayer Leverkusen prior to coming to Los Blancos.
However, at Real Madrid, the task did not consist only of making the team play well on the pitch; it also meant that Alonso would have to deal with the superstar egos of the players, and the likes of Vinicius Junior did not make the Spaniard’s job easy at all.
Alonso was sacked subsequently, and Álvaro Arbeloa, his assistant, got the job.
However, Arbeloa’s performance as the Real Madrid manager have not been that good at all. His team have looked distant second-best to Barcelona in La Liga, and the gap between the two teams has now increased to 14 points after Barca’s 2-0 El Clásico win.
Barcelona’s breathtaking attacking football has put Real Madrid out of sight, and they might get to the magic figure of 100 points this season by winning their three remaining matches. Hence, the Real Madrid trophyless season will hurt their supporters even more.
