Real Madrid’s Most Decorated Player Set to Retire at the End of the Season

Brazilian defender Marcelo Vieira da Silva Junior has established himself as one of the best left-backs of his generation. The 33-year old joined Real Madrid from Fluminense in 2007 and has made over 500 appearances for the club ever since. He was appointed club captain following the departure of Sergio Ramos.  He has played a key role in many of their success stories. Alongside Paco Gento, he is the club’s most decorated player, as both men have won 23 trophies each. However, Marcelo could surpass Gento if Real Madrid wins the UCL or La Liga at the end of the season.

Real Madrid’s Most Decorated Player Could Quit Football in the Summer

Marcelo Set to Retire After a Successful 17-year Career

Whether at club or international level, Marcelo definitely had his moments. There were times when he was unplayable and could walk into the starting line-up of any team. At a point, there were comparisons of him with legendary Roberto Carlos. But in the recent past, he hasn’t quite been a regular player. And according to reports, he will hang his boots in the summer to become a model. Concerning the issue, Spanish journalist Paco Gonzalez said;

“He isn’t going to continue playing football. He wants to win another title with Real Madrid to have one more than Gento and then he’ll say goodbye to football.

“Then, his future plan is to be a model for a North American clothing brand, possibly one that sells boxer shorts.”

Marcelo has written his name in the history books of the club. If he ends up winning 24 or 25 trophies with Real Madrid before leaving, it would be an almost impossible record to equal or break. He has definitely paid his dues- apparently, it’s time to say goodbye. The football world will never forget his talent and dedication.
