The Senne Lammens Manchester United transfer from Royal Antwerp was completed on the final day of the summer window. The 23-year-old goalkeeper joins for a fee of €21 million plus add-ons and has signed a five-year deal that runs until June 2030.
United have gone through some torrid times in terms of their goalkeeping, with both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir committing a few costly mistakes recently. The arrival of Senne Lammens at Manchester United should come as a major boost for Ruben Amorim, who will be relieved to finally strengthen the goalkeeping department.
Senne Lammens Manchester United Transfer Looks a Smart Acquisition
Lammens has played in 63 matches for Royal Antwerp in just over two seasons. He won the Belgian Super Cup with them in 2023. Prior to that, he was with Club Brugge and won the Belgian Cup with them.
He came up with pretty good performances last season one after another. He saved four penalties across all competitions by mid-February and won the Player of the Month for Royal Antwerp on two occasions last season.
However, the young Belgian has still not been able to make any international appearances for his country at the senior level. He has featured for his country at the under-21 level, though.
He was named in the Belgium squad for the UEFA Nations League play-off in 2024/25, but could not earn a cap. The huge presence of Thibaut Courtois, both literally and figuratively, in Belgium’s goal has made it difficult for Lammens to make it to the playing XI.

Manchester United’s Goalkeeping Woes Have Hurt the Club
Onana has still not been able to earn the faith of the supporters and the club management despite playing in more than 100 matches for the Red Devils. Onana had a forgettable outing in United’s defeat to Grimsby Town last week, which made Amorim drop him and start Bayindir in the league match against Burnley.
Bayindir did not inspire much confidence either, as Manchester United won the match, but conceded two goals. The Senne Lammens Manchester United move was therefore a much-needed step to address the uncertainty in goal
Since David De Gea left, United have not really had a trustworthy goalkeeper, which has further jeopardised the club’s fortunes. Lammens is still pretty young, which means that he can have a long future at the club provided his performance remains good.
Still, one would feel that a Gianluigi Donnarumma or an Emi Martinez, both of whom have been linked to United recently, would be a better fit at a big club like them. Lammens, however, comes from a country that has always produced great goalkeepers, be it Michel Preud’homme, Jean-Marie Pfaff or Courtois.
It is now for Lammens to carry on the legacy for his country by succeeding at one of the biggest clubs in the world. It remains to be seen whether he is able to do that.
