Some of the craziest transfer hijacks in football have happened when no one was watching — at the very moment everyone involved believed the deal was 100 per cent complete.

As we approach the opening of the summer transfer window on June 15, with players expected to move across countries and leagues, there is every chance that at least one major transfer deal will collapse at the final stage and be hijacked by another club.

Imagine investing weeks — sometimes months — into scouting a player, holding multiple meetings with his club, painstakingly negotiating a transfer fee, and finally reaching personal terms with the player and his representatives.

Everything is in place. The medical is scheduled, the contract is drafted, and all that remains is for the player to arrive and make it official.

Then, suddenly, everything unravels.

News breaks that the player’s flight has been diverted — not to your club, but to another, and not just any other club, but your fiercest rivals. In a matter of hours, all that careful planning, effort, and anticipation collapses into frustration and disbelief.

These are the kinds of transfer window drama that have haunted football clubs over the years — deals that seemed done, only to be dramatically snatched away in the last second.

Moments that leave fans stunned, executives furious, and serve as a brutal reminder that in football, nothing is ever truly complete until the contract is signed.

Although moments like this can be seen as a breach of trust and agreement between clubs — and can even damage long-standing relationships — one thing remains clear: the ultimate decision often rests with the player.

In modern times, football transfer hijacks have become the norm now that players hold a higher percentage of power in determining their future.

Whether it’s the allure of higher wages, a more competitive project, or the emotional pull of a footballer’s dream club, these factors and more can instantly change the course of a transfer that once seemed certain.

For many players, the opportunity to represent a dream club isn’t just another career move — it is the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition. When that opportunity suddenly presents itself, even at the final stages of negotiations, it can be almost impossible to turn down.

As frustrating as these last-minute twists are for clubs and fans alike, they highlight a simple reality of the transfer market: until pen meets paper, everything is still subject to change.

Six Of The Most Mind-Blowing Transfer Hijacks In Football: Willian Rejects Tottenham Hotspur For Chelsea

A shining star in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk, Willian had established himself as one of the most sought-after talents, attracting interest from several European heavyweights.

After moving from Ukraine to Russia and Anzhi Makhachkala in the 2013 January transfer window, the Russian side were forced to transfer list the Brazilian due to financial problems.

Spurs, under Andre Villas-Boas, in 2013, had agreed a £30 million fee with the Russian side and even arranged Willian’s flight to London.

Yet, in one of the most dramatic failed football transfers, the Brazilian, who was never meant to don the blue of Chelsea — as he had already completed his medical at the Tottenham Hotspur training centre — was a few minutes away from signing the final contract when everything changed.

While at the training centre, Willian’s agent informed him of Chelsea’s interest. According to reports, Roman Abramovich personally called Anzhi Makhachkala owner Suleyman Kerimov to match the bid — eventually paying around £32 million.

The intervention swayed Willian’s decision, leaving him at the facility for hours as Tottenham’s directors desperately tried to convince him to sign, but their attempts ultimately proved unsuccessful.

Chelsea’s last-minute transfer steal for Willian was so memorable that it inspired the club’s fans to create a song in his honour.

“The s*** from Spurs, they bought his flight,

But Willian he saw the light,

He got the call from Abramovich,

And off he went to Stamford Bridge.

He hates Tottenham, he hates Tottenham”

Willian would go on to win two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, and the UEFA Europa League during seven years at Chelsea, registering 63 goals and 62 assists in 339 appearances for the West London side.

The John Obi Mikel Transfer Battle: A Transfer Window Drama For The Ages

John Obi Mikel’s deal as a Manchester United player was already complete, as he had signed a contract and was even pictured in the Red Devils jersey.

However, somehow, the Nigerian international joining Chelsea remained the most bizarre and legally complex transfer hijacks in football.

In April 2005, Manchester United announced they had struck a deal with Norwegian club Lyn Oslo to sign the then 18-year-old Obi Mikel after they had agreed a four-year contract and the deal was set to go through in January 2006.

Shortly after the press conference, Chelsea launched a furious counterclaim that stated that they already had a pre-existing agreement with Obi Mikel and his representatives, having originally helped arrange his move to Europe and paid for his schooling in Norway.

Given the extent to which the transfer saga had escalated and the complications it threatened to create for the player, as there was growing concern that he could face a lengthy ban for signing two conflicting professional contracts with different clubs — a serious breach of FIFA transfer regulations.

With the prospect of a prolonged and uncertain legal battle involving FIFA or the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Lyn Oslo ultimately chose to reach a financial settlement in the summer of 2006, bringing an end to one of the most controversial summer transfer window disputes.

To untangle the mess, Chelsea agreed to a massive financial settlement to register the player, with £12 million going directly to Manchester United to terminate the registered pre-agreement contract Obi Mikel had signed and £4 million paid to Oslo.

Despite the chaotic start to his career in England, the transfer battle between Manchester United and Chelsea proved to be an incredible piece of business for the Blues, as the Nigerian international went on to spend 11 highly successful seasons at Stamford Bridge and transitioned into a world-class defensive midfielder.

He would go on to make 372 appearances for the club, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the UEFA Europa League, and the 2012 UEFA Champions League.

Malcom’s Transfer Deadline Day Drama: How Barcelona Hijacked Roma’s Deal

Barcelona’s transfer deadline day drama involving Bordeaux attacking midfielder Malcom remains one of the biggest transfer hijacks in football history.

What made the saga particularly remarkable was that the deal was not unfolding behind closed doors — it played out in full public view, with AS Roma having already announced an agreement and their supporters eagerly anticipating the Brazilian’s arrival.

In the summer of 2018, 21-year-old Brazilian winger Malcom was one of the most highly rated young talents in European football after an excellent season in Ligue 1 that saw him score 12 goals that campaign.

His impressive performances attracted interest from several clubs, but AS Roma appeared to have won the race after sporting director Monchi spent weeks negotiating a deal with the French side.

Eventually, an agreement was reached, and both clubs publicly confirmed the transfer on their social media platforms.

With the move seemingly complete, Roma arranged a private jet to fly Malcom to Italy that same evening, where he was scheduled to undergo his medical and finalise the transfer.

At the news of the confirmation and flight schedule, hundreds of Roma fans who wore club scarves, held up cameras and chanted Malcom’s name, as they gathered at the airport terminal, eagerly anticipating the arrival of their new star.

However, behind the scenes, Barcelona’s executives were working hard to get a winger after failing to sign Willian from Chelsea. They then contacted Bordeaux and Malcolm’s agent, offering an improved €41 million package, outbidding the already agreed €36 million deal with Roma.

Just as the player was preparing to board the plane to Italy, Bordeaux’s president called his representatives and delivered an ultimatum. He was eventually forbidden from travelling to Rome until Barcelona’s bid was resolved.

Ultimately, the plane never landed, and hundreds of stranded fans were forced to go back home in utter disbelief and heartbreak. The next day, Malcolm flew to Spain instead and was officially announced as a Barcelona player.

Despite the immense corporate drama required to secure him, the wingers’ move to Barcelona ultimately turned into a nightmare as he struggled to break into a star-studded forward line that featured Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembélé, as he registered just six La Liga starts during the entire season.

A year later, after the infamous transfer hijack, the Spanish giants cut their losses and sold him to Zenit St. Petersburg in August 2019.

David Beckham To Real Madrid: The Transfer Saga That Changed Everything

Real Madrid’s hijacking of David Beckham from Barcelona proved to be far more than just a dramatic transfer twist; it set off a remarkable chain reaction that reshaped the futures of Manchester United, Barcelona, and Real Madrid for years to come.

In the summer of 2003, Joan Laporta, who had begun his campaign to become the president of Barcelona, made a promise that he would bring England’s biggest superstar, David Beckham, to the Camp Nou if elected.

Coincidentally, Beckham’s relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson had become increasingly strained, making his departure from Manchester United appear inevitable.

While the club was prepared to part ways with one of its biggest stars, the board was determined not to strengthen a domestic rival and therefore preferred to sell the midfielder abroad.

Later that summer, United executives flew to Heathrow Airport and signed an official agreement in principle with Laporta, as both clubs later made public statements to the press about the agreement reached on the England international.

During the negotiations, however, there was one major flaw that ultimately derailed the deal: nobody had consulted David Beckham.

The midfielder was on holiday in the United States when a friend informed him through text that Manchester United had agreed to sell him to Barcelona.

The news did not go down well with Beckham, who felt he was being used as a political pawn in the power struggle between the two Spanish giants.

Angered by the situation, Beckham immediately instructed his representatives to reject Barcelona’s approach. He made it clear that if his time at Old Trafford was coming to an end, he would decide his next destination.

For years, he had dreamed of wearing the famous white shirt of Real Madrid, and he had no intention of letting anyone else make that choice for him.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who was already well into building his famous Galácticos project with stars such as Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazário, and Roberto Carlos, had been closely monitoring the situation and waiting for an opportunity to pounce.

Once it became clear that Beckham had rejected a move to Barcelona, Perez acted swiftly. Real Madrid submitted a €35 million offer that matched Manchester United’s valuation and quickly reached an agreement on personal terms with the England captain.

The speed of Los Blancos’ intervention left Manchester United with little choice. Within just 36 hours, the club was forced to reverse course, abandon its agreement with Barcelona, and sanction the sale of one of its biggest stars to Real Madrid instead.

Missing out on Beckham left Barcelona president Joan Laporta in urgent need of a marquee signing to satisfy supporters. As a result, the club quickly shifted its focus to a gifted young Brazilian playmaker at Paris Saint-Germain, Ronaldinho.

Manchester United had also been pursuing Ronaldinho and viewed him as the ideal successor to Beckham. However, after losing out to Barcelona in the race for the Brazilian, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side turned their attention elsewhere.

Their search eventually led them to an exciting 18-year-old winger from Sporting CP named Cristiano Ronaldo — a decision that would go on to reshape the club’s future and alter the course of football history.

Robinho: The Transfer Hijack That Started Manchester City’s Empire

In the footballing world of last-minute transfer hijacks, the deadline day move of Robinho from Chelsea to Manchester City is the ultimate blockbuster that completely rewrote the landscape of the Premier League by launching the era of Manchester City as a financial powerhouse.

Throughout the entire 2004 summer transfer window, Robinho was desperate to leave Real Madrid due to broken contract promises, intense personal humiliation, and the feeling of being completely unappreciated by the club’s board.

He openly stated that his dream was to move to London to play for Chelsea under former Brazil manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The move appeared all but certain, and Chelsea made the costly mistake of listing replica shirts bearing Robinho’s name on their official website before the transfer had been finalised.

The premature shirt sales reportedly infuriated Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón, who viewed the gesture as a sign of disrespect toward the Spanish club.

Feeling that Chelsea had acted as though the deal was already completed, Calderón responded by cutting off negotiations and refusing to sanction the transfer.

Then on transfer deadline day, September 1, 2008, the Abu Dhabi United Group completed its takeover of Manchester City, instantly becoming the richest club in world football.

Eager to announce their arrival on the biggest stage, the new owners embarked on an ambitious late transfer spree.

According to reports, City submitted last-minute offers for several elite stars, including Dimitar Berbatov, David Villa, and even Lionel Messi, as they sought to gauge which world-class players might be tempted by the club’s newfound financial power.

However, when City placed a bid of £32.5 million for Robinho — a sum that bypassed Chelsea’s bid — Real Madrid accepted within hours.

The hijack happened so fast that Robinho was signed without a medical, and without even fully understanding what club he had just joined.

After completing the move, the Brazilian made an awkward blunder during his first press conference, accidentally referencing Chelsea instead of his new club when he said:

“On the last day, Chelsea made a great proposal, and I accepted.”

To which a reporter replied: “You mean Manchester, right?”

The Brazilian replied: “Yeah, Manchester, sorry!”

It was only years later, after departing the club to AC Milan, that he admitted in a retrospective interview with The Sun that he actually thought he was signing for Manchester United without having the idea that a second Manchester club even existed in England, and was confused when Mark Hughes greeted him at the airport instead of Sir Alex Ferguson.

While the famous last-minute transfer hijacks were a massive commercial statement for Manchester City, they proved to be a sporting failure as Robinho struggled with the English climate, lacked consistency, and was sold to AC Milan just two years later.

Arnaut Danjuma’s Transfer Saga: How Tottenham Hotspur Stole Everton’s Signing

Much like the John Obi Mikel saga, Arnaut Danjuma’s move became a textbook example of a transfer hijack and remains one of the most embarrassing last-minute transfer steals in Premier League history.

In January 2023, Everton, under Frank Lampard, were desperately battling to avoid relegation and identified the Villarreal winger as a key signing in their fight for survival.

Danjuma agreed to the move, travelled to Merseyside, completed his medical examinations, and even signed the initial paperwork.

The transfer appeared so advanced that he sat down with Everton’s media team to record his unveiling interview and promotional content ahead of the official announcement.

However, before the club could make the move public, Everton sacked Lampard as manager, throwing the entire deal into uncertainty.

Because the final administrative paperwork had not yet been formally registered, the transfer was left in limbo. The sudden managerial change reportedly caused Danjuma to reconsider his future, and when an alternative opportunity presented itself, he seized it without hesitation.

With the deal hanging in the balance, Tottenham Hotspur, who had been monitoring the situation from the sidelines, moved swiftly.

Spurs matched the loan terms agreed by Everton, offered to cover Danjuma’s full wages, and crucially, could provide the lure of UEFA Champions League football rather than a relegation battle.

Faced with the two contrasting opportunities, the Dutch winger changed course. Danjuma declined to finalise the necessary registration paperwork with Everton and instead left the club’s training facilities.

He then travelled to London, underwent a second medical with Tottenham, and within 24 hours, one of the most dramatic football hijacks was complete as Spurs officially announced his arrival and completed a successful transfer hijack.
