The Pep Chavarria signing is the latest Chelsea transfer. The Royal Blues have signed the 28-year-old Spanish left-back recently as a direct replacement for Marc Cucurella, who has left for Real Madrid and is one of the best left-backs in the world.
The Pep Chavarria signing is yet another done by the West Londoners, who have shown no hesitation in signing players one after another during the last few seasons. However, the justification for the Pep Chavarria signing remains to be seen.
Pep Chavarria Signing: Will He Be Able To Step Up for Chelsea?
The Pep Chavarria signing means that he will be a backup to Jorrel Hato in the left-back position. However, the fact that Chavarria played in only the Spanish second division until the age of 24 raises a few questions as regards his quality as a player.
Chavarria has played in four seasons in La Liga and registered 125 appearances for Rayo Vallecano, which is a mid-table team only. He has no experience of playing in European competitions either.
In such a scenario, a price tag of £18 million seems just about okay for him. Chelsea have not spent much money to secure the Pep Chavarria signing, but his quality as a player remains largely unproven at the top level.
The Pep Chavarria signing reminds one of that of Asier Del Horno, who was signed by Chelsea two decades ago from Athletic Bilbao after he spent five seasons at the Spanish club in La Liga.
Del Horno left Chelsea after spending a solitary season at the club and moved to Valencia. The signing of Del Horno by Chelsea was neither a profitable business for the player nor for the club.
Hopefully, the Pep Chavarria signing is going to produce better results for the Royal Blues than Del Horno’s did two decades ago. For that to happen, Chavarria will have to get used to the pace of the Premier League though, which is considerably higher than that in La Liga.

Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea Squad
With Mykhailo Mudryk also cleared to play this season, there is no dearth of options for Alonso at Chelsea. He has a pretty big squad, but it remains to be seen how many of his players manage to step up to the occasion in the upcoming season.
Chelsea have multiple players in each position, and the Pep Chavarria signing is going to add another option for Alonso. Chelsea are not going to play in European competitions next season, which means that the 44-year-old Spanish manager will be able to shuffle his resources almost at will.
However, in the end, the quality of players will matter, and unless there is some solid contribution from each member of the squad, the performance of the team is not going to improve. Chelsea are supposed to end the season much higher than the 10th position they finished in last season.
As a result, it remains to be seen how Alonso manages to use his resources next season. Chelsea supporters will like to think that their team will be in the race to win the Premier League title.
