2025/26 Retro Football Jerseys Revival Sparks Mixed Reactions Across Football

As the start of the 2025/26 season looms over us, teams across Europe and the world have released most of their kits ahead of the new season.

There has been a noticeable shift towards the retro look, however, with some of those kits, but which teams have adopted the look, and how is it being received?

Teams Adopting Retro Jerseys

This summer, one of the most notable retro football jerseys that was released was made by AS Roma, who released a classic third kit.

West Ham have since released their third kit, incorporating their old badge, in a similar manner to Fulham and their new away kit.

In addition to this, Arsenal’s new away kit is a modern reimagining of their 1995/96 away kit.

The design of AS Roma’s third kit has caught the attention of many, modelled by the likes of Paulo Dybala, incorporating Roma’s traditional ASR trigram as well as the Adidas Originals logo.

The kit, which incorporates white, green and gold, also incorporates a stylish pattern inspired by the geometry of Italian gardens.

Modelled by Jarrod Bowen amongst others, West Ham have also released a stylish third kit, with a navy and gold palette, in a nod to the Thames Ironworks roots of the club, as well as the gold, which is representative of the Hammers Irons. This third kit also incorporates the oversized Hammers crest, worn for the first time since the 1980s.

Fulham have also reintroduced a crest that has been adorned by their players of the past, adding their badge from 1995 onto their new away kit. The new away kit provides fans with a modern take on Fulham’s 1999/2000 away kit, in the colour of lime green, alongside the classic Adidas three stripes.

In the 1995/96 season, Arsenal adorned a navy-blue away jersey with a lightning bolt across it as a symbolic feature of that kit.

The Gunners have released a new away kit which takes a similar approach with a modern twist – adopting a more modern collar as well as three Adidas red stripes ahead of the upcoming campaign.

How the Kits Have Been Received

Fans are often quick to admire the retro look, as the kits bring back memories for some and are representative of style and class for others. This is perhaps best represented by the new Roma kit, which has featured the most across social media in comparison to the other kits mentioned.

There are elements of each of the kits that have left fans divided, however.

The oversized crest on the new West Ham strip, although admired by some, looks out of place to others who are used to the traditional badge style and size.

Fulham’s lime green kit is also representative of a bold colour choice, indicating that many will love it. However, equally many will object to it.

This season, there does appear to be numerous classic shirts that have been released by various sides, often receiving a warm reception from fans.

Many previous retro football jerseys have done very well when it comes to sales, and many will be intrigued to see if the most recent releases can replicate that success.
