Liverpool vs Manchester United: Ruben Amorim Must Capitalise on the Statement Win at Anfield

The Liverpool vs Manchester United match ended in a 2-1 win for the Red Devils at Anfield last Sunday, October 19. It was a rare win for Manchester United at Liverpool’s fortress as Harry Maguire’s header secured the win for them after Cody Gakpo had cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s opening goal.

Liverpool thus suffered their fourth defeat in a row across all competitions. The English champions are going through a mini-crisis at the moment and are fourth in the league table with 15 points from eight matches. Meanwhile, United are ninth with 13 points from eight matches.

Liverpool vs Manchester United: Increased Desire for the Red Devils

There was a lot of desire in Manchester United’s performance on Sunday in the Liverpool vs Manchester United clash. They got the opening goal within a few minutes after the start, as Amad Diallo found Mbeumo with a neat pass through the inside-right channel for the latter to finish past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

United were very active with their attacks down the right side, with right wing-back Amad, and Mbeumo, the right winger, combining really well. However, Amad’s frequent overlaps meant that he could not often fall back to mark Liverpool’s left-winger, Gakpo. Liverpool looked threatening with their counter-attacks, with Gakpo often exploiting the space left behind by Amad.

Amad rectified that in the second half and started marking Gakpo more frequently. Moreover, United slowed the tempo of the game down to keep thwarting Liverpool’s attempts to hit them with pace. The extra man in defence, when the wing-backs fell back, helped them deal with Liverpool’s front-three.

Liverpool introduced Hugo Ekitike, Federico Chiesa and Curtis Jones as substitutes in a bid to restore parity. Ekitike’s runs through the inside-left channel troubled the Manchester United defence often, and one of them paved the way for the equaliser.

Just when it seemed that the Reds had done enough to earn a point, Maguire’s header restored the lead for the visitors, which they managed to hold on to. It was yet another occasion when Maguire scored an important late goal to win a match for his side.

Manchester United Should Build on the Momentum

United have now won back-to-back matches in the Premier League for the first time under Amorim. They should capitalise on the momentum from their win in the Liverpool vs Manchester United clash and try to improve their position in the league table.

United will play against Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest in their next two matches. Both of those sides could be tricky opposition, but winning both of those matches should take Amorim’s men very close to the top six.

The kind of performance United came up with against Liverpool should see them through in their next two matches, provided that they can reproduce it. Amorim’s men have gone through a tough time in the recent past, but now is the time to make amends.

If they can turn things around, it will be a huge relief for the United supporters, who have become used to suffering setbacks these days. Finishing in a healthy position in the league table will alleviate their pain to a large extent.
