Aston Villa’s Forgotten English Talent: Jadon Sancho’s Form Has Led to a Lack of Playing Time So Far This Season

Having joined Aston Villa in the latter stages of the summer transfer window, Jadon Sancho was a notable acquisition for Unai Emery’s side. However, Jadon Sancho’s form has left a lot to be desired, leading to a lack of playing time so far this season. But what has gone wrong for Aston Villa’s forgotten English talent?

Jadon Sancho’s Career Highlights

Throughout his career, the English winger has become a household footballing name, with frequent appearances for the English national team. Jadon Sancho’s form was impeccable with the Manchester City youth team, earning him a move to Borussia Dortmund.

Jadon Sancho’s form continued to be highly regarded with the German side, as Borussia Dortmund similarly developed Jadon Sancho and other English talents over the years, including Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, and notably, Jude Bellingham.

Sancho stayed in Germany for three and a half years. Throughout this time, he was able to score fifty goals alongside a number of assists. Jadon Sancho’s form was noted, as was his direct and positive playing style, earning him a return to England with Manchester United.

However, under the guise of managers, including Erik Ten Hag, Jadon Sancho’s form was negatively impacted upon his return to England. Aside from the 2023/24 season, the English talent played a similar number of matches to those he played in Germany. However, his goals and assist numbers dropped, in addition to his minutes on the pitch, as well as the plaudits for his playing style.

As a result of this, Sancho’s time with Manchester United has been tumultuous and has therefore included loan spells with Chelsea and with Borussia Dortmund. However, even a return to Germany wasn’t enough to revitalise Jadon Sancho’s form, as the player reportedly continued to demand high wages whilst producing an inconsistent output.

Aston Villa’s Forgotten English Talent: Jadon Sancho’s Form This Season

Amidst a number of exits from Manchester United this summer, including Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony, Jadon Sancho joined Aston Villa on loan, in a deal that the Red Devils would perhaps have preferred to be a permanent one.

Since then, Aston Villa’s forgotten English talent has only featured in four Premier League matches, three Europa League matches and one EFL Cup match. Although his minutes have been limited in each, Sancho is yet to register a goal or an assist.

Although Jadon Sancho’s form was not aided by the tumultuous start to this season for Aston Villa, as the Villains have improved due to contributions from the likes of Emiliano Buendia, Sancho has not provided similar contributions.

Fellow English winger Harvey Elliott has also had limited playing time under Unai Emery this season. Similarly, Elliott has failed to contribute as the Villains have turned around their form, after he joined the club on a permanent transfer.

Both players will feature further over the course of the season. However, manager Unai Emery will expect an increased end product to ensure an increase in minutes for both players.

Conclusion

At the age of only 25, many English fans and fans around the world may believe it is a shame that Sancho has become a forgotten English talent. Jadon Sancho’s form has been negative. However, the forward has a good amount of time left in his career to reproduce previous form.

If Sancho does reproduce previous form, many will believe that this will not take place with Aston Villa. However, when Sancho inevitably leaves Manchester United, where will he go, and will he succeed with his new club?
