Viktor Gyokeres’ Form Against Smaller Teams Is a Positive for Arsenal

Viktor Gyokeres’ form has not been that great for Arsenal. The Swedish striker enjoyed a great scoring record for Sporting CP before coming to Arsenal. He scored a very impressive 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting, which prompted Arsenal to sign him.

However, Viktor Gyokeres’ form has not been as spectacular for the Gunners since joining them before the start of the season. Still, he has chipped in with a performance here and there, and his record in the Champions League has been quite good so far.

Viktor Gyokeres’ Form in Europe Has Been Pretty Good

Viktor Gyokeres’ form has been pretty good for the Gunners in Europe. The 27-year-old has scored 10 goals in 29 matches for Arsenal so far. However, he has scored four goals in six matches in the Champions League, including his strike against Kairat Almaty last Wednesday, January 28.

Viktor Gyokeres’ form against top teams has been pretty ordinary, but he has often been able to get his name on the scoring sheet against smaller teams. The fact that he has been able to reach double digits in terms of scoring goals shows that he has justified his signing to a certain extent.

Now that Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus have both returned to action as the No.9, Arsenal have a number of options to choose from. They also have Mikel Merino, who has played there at times and come up with some crucial goals, too.

However, Gyokeres is probably the only specialist striker Arsenal have in their squad. As a result, Mikel Arteta should be relying on him a great deal for scoring goals. Gyokeres is a big, strong man, which means he should thrive in tussles inside the penalty box.

Still, he has probably been found wanting in terms of the subtle ball skills at times, which means that he has found it difficult to score against big teams with quality defences. However, there is still time for the Swede to improve upon his game.

Arsenal at the Top of Premier League and Champions League

The Gunners currently lead the table in both the Premier League table and the Champions League table. They are among the favorites to win at least one of those titles. However, for that to happen ultimately, Gyokeres will have to keep scoring upfront.

The Gunners still have more than 20 matches to play across all competitions and performing well in them will enable the Swede to go close to the cherished milestone of 20 goals for a striker in a season. Viktor Gyokeres’ form is good enough at the moment for him to achieve that.

However, the Gunners will want him to score against the big sides as well. Arsenal have a difficult visit to Leeds United this weekend and might have to fight really hard to get three points from that match. Gyokeres could prove to be a key player for them in that match as well, provided he is given a chance to start in it.

It remains to be seen whether he is able to keep justifying his signing in the upcoming matches as well.
