Champions League Round of 16 Draw: Revenge in the Mind of Paris Saint-Germain as They Prepare for a Replay of the Club World Cup Final

Before the Champions League round of 16 draw was finalised, Luis Enrique and several PSG stars were asked about the club they would prefer to play in the next round of the competition, and they all echoed the same team: Chelsea. Now, they have their wish. The French giants are set to face the Blues in a high-stakes two-legged tie on March 10 and 17, a matchup that became the most talked-about outcome of the Champions League round of 16 draw.

Still reeling from a stinging 3-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea during the Club World Cup, PSG would view this as a “revenge match,” the ultimate redemption arc, a chance to get one back at the Blues and shatter their European ambitions.

The domestic outlook for both clubs couldn’t be more different. While PSG have surged back to the top of Ligue 1 following a slip-up by RC Lens, Chelsea remain mired in inconsistency. Sitting fifth in the Premier League table, the Blues have been their own worst enemies, struggling to put games to bed even when in a comfortable position, coupled with a glaring lack of discipline that has seen them rack up eight red cards already this season.

The road ahead is brutal. This mid-March collision with the Parisian powerhouse is sandwiched between gruelling domestic fixtures that will test the depth and temperament of Liam Rosenior’s squad. To survive this period, Chelsea must find a level of composure they have lacked all year. Every match is now a final as they fight to stabilise their season and claw their way back into a Champions League qualification spot.

Does Liam Rosenior Have a Tactical Edge Over Luis Enrique?

Both managers have faced off a couple of times, going back to Rosenior’s spell at Strasbourg, with the Englishman having a decent record against the former Barca coach. In three games, Rosenior’s Strasbourg faced Enrique’s PSG and recorded a 3-3 draw, a 2-1 win, and a 4-2 loss.

The former Strasbourg coach now leads a different team, filled with better quality players in every position. There is a strong belief that he could take the tactical ideas from those games played against PSG to neutralise Luis Enrique’s possession-based system once again. With world-class talent now at his disposal, Rosenior has the opportunity to turn those “underdog” performances into a dominant display, potentially tipping the scales in Chelsea’s favor.

João Pedro and Cole Palmer vs PSG, Again

The duo who masterminded PSG’s loss in the Club World Cup months ago will need to rise to the occasion once again across two legs to help their team advance to the quarterfinals of the competition. João Pedro, who is Chelsea’s leading goalscorer in the League with 11 goals has been in fine form since the new coach arrived and has been the shining light despite his team’s inability to maintain defensive consistency.

And while Cole Palmer has not had the best of seasons by his high standards, he’s still a very dangerous player who could turn the tide of the tie with a single moment of individual brilliance.

Having already proven they can dismantle the Parisian backline on the world stage, Pedro and Palmer remain the focal points of an attack that must now compensate for a backline that has given away cheap goals in recent weeks.

The Champions League round of 16 draw has confirmed that João Pedro will come up against the captain of his national side, Marquinhos, and the 24-year-old will hope that his captain once again finds no answer to the explosive pace and clinical movement that he’s well known for.

Facing one of the world’s most experienced defenders is the ultimate test for the young forward, but Pedro’s familiarity with Marquinhos from the Brazilian camp could give him the psychological edge needed to exploit any rare lapses in the PSG backline.

Champions League Round of 16 Draws: City, Newcastle, Tottenham and Chelsea all get Tough Games

Manchester City and Real Madrid meet again. This clash seems to have become a permanent fixture of the European calendar. This matchup makes history as it is the first time in the Champions League that the same two teams will face off in the knockout stages for five consecutive seasons, cementing it as the modern “European Clásico.”

For Newcastle, the Champions League round of 16 draw has set up a daunting replay of last season’s league phase encounter against Barcelona. Two goals from Marcus Rashford – who is set to become a permanent Barcelona player this summer after the club reached a €30 million agreement with Manchester United – were enough to secure all three points in their last meeting.

For Tottenham, the draw provides a historic milestone as they prepare for a first-ever Champions League meeting against Atlético Madrid.

Meanwhile, table-toppers Arsenal appear to have a more favourable path on paper. They travel to Germany to take on Kai Havertz’s former team, Bayer Leverkusen. Elsewhere, Liverpool face a hostile atmosphere as they travel to Istanbul to take on Galatasaray.
