After a wild match in the second leg against Real Madrid, Bayern Munich are through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. There they will face the defending European champions.

Bayern Munich vs PSG has become a major European rivalry in recent seasons. Here, we look back at some of its history and look ahead to what to expect from this season’s upcoming encounters.

Bayern Munich vs PSG: A History of One of Europe’s New Great Rivalries

The Bayern Munich vs PSG fixture has an all-time history going back to the 1994/95 season, with 16 encounters (15 of them in the Champions League and one in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals).

The Bavarians have won nine of those matches, while the Parisians have won the other seven. It is interesting to see that none of the encounters ended in a draw.

In any case, the Bayern Munich vs PSG rivalry really began after the 2020 Champions League final, despite all the previous history between them. That night in Lisbon, the German record champions came out on top 1-0, courtesy of a Kingsley Coman winner.

Since then, the sides have met seven times, usually in very hard-fought, close games, followed by wild and sometimes provocative celebrations by the winning team.

Of those seven encounters, the Bavarians were victorious in five of them, but the ones in which the French side triumphed were quite decisive: in 2021, they knocked Bayern out of the Champions League on the old away goals rule, which UEFA abolished the season after that.

PSG had defeated Bayern 3-2 in Munich, before losing1-0 at home. The other recent win by the Paris side over the Bavarians was the above-mentioned 2025 Club World Cup quarter-final. Bayern Munich controlled the match in just about every statistic, except the one that matters: goals.

PSG somehow came out 2-0 on top, but left bad blood between the teams, after a coming together between Gianluigi Donnarumma and Jamal Musiala left the latter seriously injured. In the end, this only added fuel to the Bayern Munich vs PSG rivalry.

What To Look Forward To This Time Around

In the semi-final meetings this season (which take place on April 28 in Paris and May 6 in Munich respectively), we can expect two teams at the top of their game.

Both sides have proven this season, that they belong in the absolute elite of club football and they’ve earned their place amongst the best four teams in Europe.

In their previous meeting this season in the league phase of the Champions League, Bayern dominated proceedings in the first half with two goals from Luis Diaz.

Unfortunately, the Colombian international was sent off for a bad tackle, and PSG bossed the game from then on, but the Bavarians still came out with a 2-1 victory in the end.

This match will probably not tell us much about the outcome of the Bayern Munich vs PSG tie to come. It will come down to small details to be sure.

One of them may well be the fact that Bayern coach Vincent Kompany will miss the first leg due to a yellow card suspension.

But either way, the tie promises excitement and a lot for fans to look forward to.
