The scramble for World Cup final tickets has taken a dramatic turn, with resale prices reaching staggering levels just months before the 2026 tournament kicks off.

According to reports, a small number of final tickets have appeared on FIFA’s official resale platform for more than $2 million each, underlining growing concerns around affordability.

The final, set to be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, is always the most sought-after match of any World Cup. But even by those standards, the current market for the tournament’s tickets is raising eyebrows across the football world.

World Cup Final Tickets Hit Unprecedented Resale Levels

At the centre of the controversy are four adjacent seats listed at roughly $2.3 million each.

These World Cup final tickets are located behind one of the goals, in what would traditionally be considered premium seating, though not the very best in the stadium.

The total cost for all four World Cup final tickets exceeds $9 million, a figure that has sparked widespread debate about the direction of football’s biggest tournament.

While these prices are extreme, they are not entirely isolated. Other resale listings show World Cup final tickets priced in the tens of thousands, with even the cheapest options now approaching five figures.

This reflects a broader trend where demand for the final far outweighs supply. With only around 80,000 seats available and global interest at its peak, World Cup final tickets have effectively become one of the most exclusive commodities in sport.

A System Driven by Market Forces

One key detail is that FIFA does not set the resale prices for World Cup final tickets on its marketplace.

Instead, sellers are free to list their seats at whatever price they choose, creating a system shaped almost entirely by market demand.

FIFA does, however, take a percentage from each transaction (15%), charging fees to both buyers and sellers.

“FIFA’s Resale Marketplace provides a safe, transparent and secure environment for fans to sell or transfer tickets to other fans,” a FIFA spokesperson told CNN Sports.

“The applicable resale facilitation fees are aligned with industry standards across North American sports and entertainment sectors.”

Still, the optics of World Cup final tickets being listed at such extreme prices have drawn criticism. For many supporters, it reinforces the idea that attending the final is increasingly out of reach.

Even official sales underline the gap.

Face-value World Cup final tickets released through FIFA have been priced at around $10,990, already placing them beyond the budget of most fans before resale inflation is even considered.

Growing Concerns Over Accessibility

The situation has added to wider concerns about the cost of attending the 2026 World Cup.

Travel, accommodation and general expenses in the United States are already high, and the price of World Cup final tickets only adds to that burden.

Estimates suggest that following a team through to the final could cost tens of thousands of dollars overall, making it a luxury experience rather than a traditional fan journey.

There is also scepticism over whether the most expensive World Cup final tickets will actually sell at those headline prices.

However, even if those top-end sales do not materialise, the wider trend remains clear. Prices are rising sharply, and access to the final is becoming increasingly limited.

The World Cup final is meant to be the pinnacle of the sport, but if World Cup final tickets continue to climb beyond reach, the atmosphere inside the stadium could suffer.
