Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, who endured a pretty ordinary first half of the season, has got his act together over the last couple of months. Watkins has scored 17 goals in 52 matches for Villa this season and also has the experience of featuring in major tournaments before.
Calvert-Lewin has earned 12 international caps for the Three Lions so far, scoring four goals in them. That shows he is not entirely new to international football and could prove a handful against weaker opposition if selected.
On the flip side, he earned 11 of his 12 international caps in 2020 and 2021. There was a five-year-long break during which he did not play a single match for England. Thomas Tuchel recalled him to the England squad for the international friendlies against Uruguay and Japan earlier this year, but he made an appearance in only one of those matches.

Lack of Experience of Playing in Major Tournaments Could Work Against Him
As mentioned already, Calvert-Lewin has never featured for a major international tournament for the Three Lions so far, unlike Watkins and Welbeck. That might work against him when Thomas Tuchel picks his side.
However, as the Dominic Calvert-Lewin form for Leeds United suggests, he will definitely be in the reckoning when the final England World Cup squad is selected. Calvert-Lewin is one of the most dependable strikers in the country, with his hold-up play being really good.
However, Watkins’ ability inside the opposition penalty box might be a little better than Calvert-Lewin’s, which means that he might get the nod ahead of the former in the end.
Either way, Calvert-Lewin is a key player for his club and will be an important striker in the Premier League next season as well. For now, Calvert-Lewin should only put his focus on Leeds’ remaining two fixtures in the Premier League this season, which are against Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United.
