Following a Friday, May 22 announcement, Manchester United have officially placed their trust in Michael Carrick, confirming the former midfielder as the club’s permanent head coach on a new two-year contract at Old Trafford.

The decision follows an impressive spell in interim charge that transformed the mood around the club and revived hopes for a brighter future.

For Carrick, this appointment represents more than a promotion. It is another chapter in a long relationship with Manchester United, a club where he spent 12 years as a player, won multiple major trophies, and later returned as part of the coaching setup.

Now he has been handed perhaps the biggest challenge of all – leading the club back to the top. The announcement that Manchester United confirm Carrick has immediately become one of football’s biggest talking points.

Manchester United Confirm Carrick After Impressive Interim Spell

Carrick initially stepped into the role on an interim basis after the departure of Ruben Amorim earlier this season. At the time, United were struggling for consistency and appeared to be drifting away from their objectives.

What followed was a remarkable turnaround.

Under Carrick, United rediscovered momentum and climbed the Premier League table during a strong run of results. He has won 11 of his 16 matches in charge, helping the team secure Champions League qualification and secure third place on the Premier League table.

United defeated several major rivals and suddenly looked like a side playing with renewed belief and confidence, with statement victories against Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two games as interim, as well as wins against Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Early on, players already appeared more comfortable, performances improved, and supporters quickly began calling for him to get the role permanently.

The decision to make him the new Manchester United manager, therefore, did not arrive as a major surprise. Club officials clearly believed the former midfielder had earned the opportunity through results and performances.

The words ‘Carrick appointed as Manchester United manager’ represent a major moment both for the coach and for the club itself. It marks the beginning of a new chapter and gives Carrick an opportunity few people ever receive.

During his playing career, Carrick was part of one of Manchester United’s most successful periods under Sir Alex Ferguson. He won five league titles, four domestic trophies, six Community Shields and the Champions League while establishing himself as one of the most intelligent midfielders in English football.

After retirement, he moved into coaching and later earned praise during his time at Middlesbrough. His work with younger players and his calm approach attracted attention, and eventually he returned to Old Trafford.

The appointment of the new Manchester United manager is viewed by many supporters as a move toward restoring the club’s identity. Carrick understands the culture, expectations and demands that come with managing United.

Still, this appointment does not guarantee success.

The Real Challenge Begins for the New Manchester United Manager

Managing a club of Manchester United’s size over a full season presents very different challenges compared to an interim spell.

The new Manchester United manager now faces European football, a demanding fixture schedule and likely squad changes during the transfer window. Expectations will rise quickly.

Manchester United supporters have seen multiple rebuilding projects over the last decade. Managers have arrived with optimism before finding life at Old Trafford difficult.

That reality means Manchester United confirming Carrick is only the beginning of the story rather than the final chapter.

Questions remain over the squad. Reinforcements could still be required in midfield and other key areas if United want to compete consistently with the Premier League’s elite.

For now, though, optimism surrounds Old Trafford. With Carrick appointed as Manchester United manager, it signals the start of another project, and Manchester United are betting that one of their own can finally return the club to its former glory.

The message is now official: Manchester United confirm Carrick, and one of the biggest jobs in football belongs to him permanently.
