Six days on from their narrow 3-2 defeat in Florence, Club Brugge will once again play from behind as Fiorentina heads to Janbreydelstadion for the second leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League semifinal.

Looking to become the second team to make the final of UEFA’s major club competitions, Club Brugge’s impressive winning run was halted last week in Italy. They did get back to winning ways over the weekend, defeating Antwerp 2-1 away. As a result of the Brussels derby between fellow title challengers Union Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht, which ended goalless, Club now leads the league with three games to play.
Now with a record 8-1-1 record under interim manager Nicky Hayen, Club has an excellent chance to make a first continental final in 31 years. They are unbeaten at home in the Conference League this term, winning their last four. In their four previous European home semifinals, they have won all of them. That could do them well going into Wednesday’s clash.
Scoring late on last Thursday, Fiorentina heads to Belgium with a much-needed advantage. It has been 14 years since La Viola lost a two-legged tie in Europe despite winning the home leg. As they are 90 minutes away from a second consecutive Conference League final, Vincenzo Italiano’s side will need a big performance in Belgium to hold on.
Having heavily rotated their squad in their weekend defeat to Hellas Verona, Fiorentina should be the fresher of the two sides. However, there is more pressure on the Italian side ahead of the second leg. While Club Brugge qualified for European football next season over the weekend, La Viola are far from assured continental action next fall. That is despite Italy earning an extra European spot based courtesy of UEFA’s seasonal coefficient ranking. Thus, winning the Conference League might just be Fiorentina’s way back into Europe for next term.

As written in last week’s preview, we had a draw for the game in Florence. Had it not been for Mbola N’zola’s late goal, that would have been accurate. Keeping that in mind, we can expect a similar type of game. It will be a close one, but Fiorentina should be able to do enough to advance to their second UECL final.
