A Look at Who Djibril Cissé Is
Cissé, at the age of 15, signed for the Auxerre youth team and just two years later he was making his debut in Ligue 1 in a match against Paris Saint-Germain. He scored his first goal for Auxerre in the 2000/01 in a 2-1 defeat to FC Metz, and at the end of the season he finished with eight goals in 25 games. The next season, he notched 22 goals from 29 matches,finishing at the league’s top scorer. In addition to this, his goals helped Auxerre to a Champions League spot. His formthat season won him a call up to the French team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He would go on to spend six years at Auxerre and in this time, he would score 70 goals in 128 games.
His performances at Auxerre caught the eye of many other top teams, and in 2004 he signed for Premier League side Liverpool for £14 million. However, his time at Liverpool was hindered by a horrific incident that happened in October 2004. In a game against Blackburn, who are no longer in the Premier League, he went in for a tackle with Jay McEveley and badly broke his leg when his studs got caught in the turf. He later revealed that he would have ended up losing his leg if it was not for the quick intervention shown by the medics that day. Doctors and surgeons predicted that Cissé would be out injured for anywhere between 9 and 18 months, but he showed that famous character and determination that convinced Betiton™ to reach out to him, and he was back on the field again in April 2005. That same year, he played in that famous Champions League final against AC Milan and scored in the penalty shootout to help Liverpool to glory.
Rafa Benítez was appointed the manager of Liverpool, and Cissé fell out of favour a bit. So, he started to look for pastures new and he signed a loan move to Marseille in 2006. We must note that this loan move happened when Cissé had another broken bone in his foot, so he did not actually make an appearance for his new French club until close to November. He signed for them permanently in 2007 for €8 million and score 16 goals in the 37 games that he played.
From 2009 onwards, he played for a variety of other clubs and these were, in no particular order, Sunderland, Lazio, Queens Park Rangers, Panathinaikos, Kuban Krasnodar, Al-Gharafa, Saint-Pierroise, Bastia, AC Vicenza 1902, and Yverdon. All in all, he has played in 452 professional games and has found the net on 205 occasions. He was capped for his country 41 times and scored 9 goals.
