England Strikers that could be on the plane to Russia
Gareth Southgate nightmare might just have ended after hearing Harry Kane will be fit for the 2018 World Cup. However, his match sharpness might not be as good as he has shown already this season. So if Kane does get injured again, then who are the Three Lions next options to take on the plane?
Jamie Vardy
Even if Kane is fully fit and raring to go the Leicester City man should already be on the plane to Russia. The Foxes’ striker has been one of the Premier League’s unsung heroes so far. Scoring 16 goals in all competitions in 29 appearances. It might be fair to say England do not have a Riyad Mahrez in their team, but the pace of Jamie Vardy can still hurt teams defences. He might be 31-years-old but he is still recognised as one of the fastest players in the league. But even though he has the pace we cannot take his incredible finishings after scoring a world-class goal on Saturday. Jamie Vardy should be the next name behind Kane and him coming off the bench will hurt them in the last 10 minutes.
Marcus Rashford
The Manchester United striker has been lacking the minutes on the field throughout this season but has gain two starts from last two games. In which he scored two goals in the derby match against Liverpool, but struggled to make an impact against Sevilla which saw the Premier League side crash out of the Champions League. Since his introduction, Rashford has gradually found himself drifting further out wide. He has played most of this season as a left winger. In fact, going off of his stats this season, playing out wide might be his strongest position. However, the 20-year-old can definitely do a job in a central role as well. The United striker has been involved in 21 goals throughout this campaign, scoring six goals in the League.
Callum Wilson
Wilson is definitely someone you would find on the list of potential call-ups. With the lack of strikers, could the Bournemouth striker make it to World Cup? A player that is very similar to Jamie Vardy with his pace but his strength could be a lot more useful for the three lions. The Bournemouth striker has struggled with injuries over the past year and only return early November. Since his return to Premier League action, the 26-year-old has gone on to score seven goals after some time out. With the last set of international friendlies coming up Callum Wilson could be called-up for the very first time in Kane’s absence. Does he deserve the call-up? He might not but it the perfect chance to prove us wrong.
Other Possible Inclusions
One name that has been touted for the past few months now is Glenn Murray. The 34-year-old has been flying high with Brighton this season, scoring 11 goals. He might be one of the oldest options out there, but he has definitely shown why he deserves to go.
One that probably won’t get even discussed is Charlie Austin. However, when he is fit Austin definitely shows he can be a top goalscorer, but the injuries have got the best of him. Given England’s history with injured players in the past, it may be wiser to opt for a more consistent starter.
