Newcastle United were by far the busiest English club during the January transfer window. The Magpies were recently bought by new owners and didn’t wait long to splash the cash. They have acquired several new players totalling up to £93m. However, have they done enough to avoid relegation?
Have Newcastle United Done Enough To Avoid Relegation?
Strengthened Defence
It’s no surprise that Eddie Howe prioritised defenders above all else in the transfer window. Newcastle’s leaky defence has been a massive talking point all season as they have conceded 43 goals in the Premier League this season already. Only Norwich City have conceded more. This is why it makes perfect sense for three of Newcastle’s five January signings to be defenders.
Kieran Trippier was the first defender to join Newcastle. The former Atletico Madrid defender made the move very early in the transfer window for £15m. The England international has already debuted for the club and has had an instant impact. Newcastle have only conceded two goals in the three matches that Trippier has started. Not only has he helped the defence, but he has also provided a lot more for the team going forward.
Newcastle then signed Dan Burn from Brighton and agreed on a deal with Aston Villa to bring in Matt Targett on loan. Both defenders have Premier League experience under their belt and should fit into the club rather quickly.
Attacking Threat
Newcastle have heavily relied on Callum Wilson and Allan Saint Maximin over the past. However, Eddie Howe has now introduced Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes for a combined fee of £65m. Guimaraes was signed from Lyon and although he is a defensive midfielder, he does enjoy adventuring higher up the field and has got three assists in Ligue 1 this season. He also has two assists in five Europa League games.
Chris Wood was signed from Burnley and only scored three goals for the Clarets this season. However, Eddie Howe has shown faith in the forward. Wood is one of the tallest strikers in the league and he should receive plenty of chances at goal with Trippier and Targett crossing the ball into the box to him.
Newcastle’s next game will be against Everton. Frank Lampard was recently appointed as Everton manager and made a massive statement, beating Brentford 4-1 in the FA Cup. Eddie Howe will have to prepare his team well if they wish to stop Everton.
