The Julian Alvarez transfer has been the most acrimonious transfer saga of this summer across Europe. Two of the biggest clubs in Europe, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, have placed bids for the Atletico de Madrid player, and in response have faced trolling on social media by the player’s club.
With only four days remaining until the start of the La Liga 2026/27 season, Alvarez’s future is still up in the air.
Julian Alvarez Transfer To The Metropolitano
Julian Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024 from Manchester City. The move was completed for a reported fee of €95 million, and the Julian Alvarez transfer to Atletico Madrid started a new era at the Metropolitano with many of their key players like Antoine Griezmann and Koke nearing the end of their time with the Rojiblancos.
Across two seasons for Atletico Madrid, Julian Alvarez has made 106 appearances, scored 49 goals and has assisted 17 times. So far, the Julian Alvarez transfer has not lived up to the expectations of the fans at the Metropolitano, as Atletico have not won any silverware and have finished third and fourth in La Liga across these two seasons, respectively.
Julian Alvarez: Barcelona’s Ideal Replacement For Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski left FC Barcelona at the end of last season, and Barcelona’s plan to replace the Polish striker was the Julian Alvarez transfer from Atletico Madrid. The Blaugrana contacted Alvarez and his agents to inquire about a potential transfer to Camp Nou, and the Argentine forward was open to the move and seemed keen to wear the Blaugrana jersey. At the end of May, after agreeing personal terms with the player, Barcelona sent an official bid of €100 million to Atletico Madrid.
Atletico Madrid rejected Barcelona’s bid immediately and took to social media to troll FC Barcelona. The Madrid club accused Barca of illegally contacting the player during a protected period and filed a case with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Now, the RFEF has opened a disciplinary investigation against Barcelona after Atletico’s allegations.
Real Madrid’s Surprise Attempt For The Argentine Forward
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez promised the fans and socios in his presidential campaign that he would bring a Galactico to the Santiago Bernabeu if they re-elected him as president. On June 7, 2026, elections took place, and the voters chose Perez. To fulfil his promise, Perez made a €150 million bid for the Julian Alvarez transfer on June 9, 2026.
Atletico Madrid immediately rejected the bid and once again chose their familiar route of social media trolling, this time aimed at Real Madrid. Los Blancos ended their pursuit of the Argentine forward after Atletico Madrid’s unconventional response.
Alvarez’s Public Expression Of His Desire To Leave
On June 22, the Julian Alvarez transfer saga took its next turn. Alvarez publicly expressed his desire to leave Atletico de Madrid in an interview after the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage game against Austria. The Argentine was clear that he had talked to the hierarchy at the Metropolitano and wanted a transfer away from the club.
He said:
“I spoke with the people at the club, with those I had to speak with, and the best thing for everyone is a transfer, and I want to fulfill my dream.”

Barcelona’s Continued Interest In The Julian Alvarez Transfer
FC Barcelona remained confident of getting the player, despite Atletico Madrid’s rejection, for two reasons: they firmly believed that Alvarez would solve Barcelona’s striker crisis and because of the player’s interest; however, there was little they could do because of the strained relationship with Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona’s only hope of completing the Julian Alvarez transfer was if the player pushed to leave. With the Argentine busy at the World Cup, FC Barcelona had to wait for Alvarez to return to Madrid and express his desire in person to the Atletico Madrid board.
The Current Scenario
Now, after returning from his vacation, Alvarez has undergone his pre-season medical tests with Atletico Madrid, and he is set to meet with the Atleti manager, Diego Simeone, in the upcoming days. It is widely reported that Alvarez would tell Simeone of his wish to play for Barcelona and leave the Madrid side. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are being completely inflexible in their stance regarding their star player, and Barcelona are eagerly waiting for the meeting to take place and see if they can progress with the Julian Alvarez transfer.
