The 2026/2027 summer transfer window has officially come to a close on September 2, 2026, with Julián Álvarez staying at Atlético Madrid. The club informed the Argentine that they weren’t ready to sell the player, let alone to a rival club such as FC Barcelona. Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid remains uncertain, as the one-time World Cup winner is tied to a contract that keeps him at the club till 2030.
This doesn’t come as a surprise, as Atlético consider the forward an important player in the team owing to his versatility to play in different positions. Moreover, should Álvarez head out of the club, Los Rojiblancos are only left with Alexander Sørloth to make up for the striker role.
Fabrizio Romano also notes Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid remains in the abyss. Romano said:
“Everyone still expects to see Julian Alvarez stay at Atlético de Madrid this summer. Several clubs have tried to join the race, but Julian’s response has always remained the same: to go to Barcelona.”
Arsenal inquired about the forward’s availability, even going so far as to assist his family in relocating to England. As reported exclusively by Graeme Bailey, the Gunners were ready to facilitate the visa and provide accommodation for his family. Although the ex-Manchester City player was open to the move, he has always preferred a move to Barcelona.
However, no agreement was reached with either club as Atlético wouldn’t cushion a sale. Neither bid from Arsenal nor Barcelona was able to convince the Spanish club to strike an agreement. In fact, Real Madrid FC had their £130 million bid rejected. Ultimately, it’s not clear what will become of the Argentine’s future. However, even though Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid comes down to the club’s decision, one thing is for sure: the forward will become a Barcelona player sooner rather than later.

Julián Álvarez’s Future At Atlético Madrid: Paying The Last Respects
Just as Enzo Fernández wasn’t happy with how his transfer from Chelsea to Manchester City stalled, Álvarez wasn’t quite happy in the same vein. The player’s frustration was visible in his absence from three training sessions last week, and this explains why Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid remains unknown.
Fernando Hidalgo, his agent, commented on Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid and his absence from training:
“It’s all part of the plan. There is no panic from our side. But I will be honest — I am disappointed with Miguel Ángel Gil Marín. We expected dialogue, respect and a solution that takes Julián’s wishes into consideration.”
Speaking about Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid and his frustration with the club, Antoine Griezmann noted:
“I remember very well what happened during my own time at Atlético. I know what it feels like when everything becomes complicated — the pressure from the club, the fans, the media and the people around you. That period taught me a lot. Julián is now experiencing his own battle. I don’t know everything that has happened behind closed doors, but I know him enough to say that he deserves respect. He has given everything on the pitch for Atlético, and he should not be treated like an enemy because he has ambitions for his future.”
Although it was stated that Álvarez missed three training sessions, it is argued, however, that his absence was occasioned by an illness and not necessarily his frustration. It wasn’t long after that the Argentine forward could be seen training with his teammates last Sunday, and he was also spotted in training with his teammates on September 1.
Álvarez hasn’t released a statement concerning his transfer saga and has shown ultimate respect for Atlético. He knows he has the support and trust of the fans, and wouldn’t do anything to thwart that. Although Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid remains in the abyss, the player is optimistic about his future and is certain about where he wants to be.
