Juventus: Last Season’s Instability Means a Season of Stability Is Needed in 2025/26

In the Serie A last season, Turin side Juventus finished fourth, while Napoli won the title.

This final league position is one that many sides would be satisfied with. However, for a side of Juventus’ stature, this finish constitutes a season of instability for the side, coupled with recent financial troubles, which would like to return to challenging for the title in the coming season.

But what went wrong and what might they improve on?

The Problems

The first issue that presented itself throughout last season for Juventus relates to the frequency with which various managers departed the club. Juventus had three managers at the helm last season, including Igor Tudor and Thiago Motta.

Another issue that arose due to the change in managers was the need for consistent adaptations to the philosophies that players had to follow. Various changes in formation have led to players moving in and out of the starting XI, and to a lack of clarity over some players’ futures.

Current manager and manager for the 2025/26 season, Igor Tudor, often adopts a formation that requires three centre-backs and operates with wing-backs rather than wingers. As a result of this, young winger Samuel Mbangula has departed the club and Argentine winger Nico Gonzalez’s future looks uncertain.

In addition to this, some players who have joined the side struggled to settle and provide consistent performances throughout the season. Two arrivals from the Premier League are representative of this.

Both Lloyd Kelly, previously of AFC Bournemouth, and Douglas Luiz, previously of Aston Villa, are looking for moves away following underwhelming performances this season.

The Solutions

Solutions for Juventus to resolve their problems relate to consistency and various squad changes to ensure that players are refreshed and ready to challenge throughout next season.

After taking on the role of caretaker manager, Igor Tudor has signed a contract with the club that expires in 2027. Although there may be some negative results for the side next season, Juventus should be more patient to allow Tudor to embed his principles into the side, as they have a squad that is capable of showing quality.

Furthermore, patience should be utilised with some of the players as Juventus have frequently opted for a young starting XI.

Although a little more experience would eradicate some issues that are presented when frequently using young players, players like Kheprem Thuram and Kenan Yildiz have both shown that they have significant room for growth and may flourish for the team.

Along with Tudor embedding his principles into the team, he should be allowed to have his players in order to integrate his principles into the team. Those players who may not be utilised may generate healthy funds for Tudor to spend on players that he believes are better suited to the side he wants to create.

The Italian side have made some acquisitions so far that fit his mould, including the arrival of Jonathan David. David has been a prolific striker throughout his time with Lille.

Therefore, for Juventus to acquire his services on a free transfer, this may prove to be a bargain for the Turin side.

Juventus’ Path Ahead

Juventus are a side at the moment that appear to be very much undertaking a transitional period, integrating youth into the team.

This process has not been smooth, as many might expect. However, next season the side has potential if they follow good philosophies.

Should Tudor remain in charge next season, and the likes of Kenan Yildiz and Jonathan David flourish, the young side may prove to be title challengers once more.

Juventus fans will be hoping that the current crop of players has learned the necessary lessons from last season and will provide more of a healthy challenge in the upcoming campaign.
