Omar Marmoush looked to have made the left-wing role his own at Manchester City in the beginning of the 2025/26 season, but he is not going to be able to play for his side in the Manchester Derby against Manchester United in their next Premier League game.
That is because the Egyptian forward has ended up suffering an injury during the international break, and that is going to be a major blow to his hopes of shining for Pep Guardiola’s side in the upcoming derby game against their bitter rivals. Here, we look at the Omar Marmoush injury, and its impact.
Omar Marmoush Injury Details
Marmoush joined up with the Egypt national team for the September (2025) international break games, but disaster struck during his appearance for his national team in Egypt’s 0-0 draw against Burkina Faso in the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier which resulted in the Omar Marmoush Injury.
That is because he had to be taken off in the early stages of the game after being involved in a nasty challenge, something that seriously injured his knee. He was even seen leaving the stadium on crutches due to the severity of the injury sustained.
Manchester City have now confirmed that the Omar Marmoush injury means he will not be available for Pep Guardiola in the upcoming match against Manchester United. In an official statement, the club stated:
“Manchester City FC can confirm that Omar Marmoush has sustained a knee injury whilst on international duty with Egypt. The City striker suffered the injury in the early stages of Egypt’s World Cup qualifying match with Burkina Faso on Tuesday evening.
“Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation. Everyone at City wishes Omar a speedy recovery.”
Even though the exact timeframe for which Marmoush will be out of action for has not been revealed yet, it appears that he might have sustained a pretty nasty injury. He is unlikely to be able to play any matches for the Cityzens in the September matches and he’ll need to work really hard in his rehabilitation work to be back in action quickly for his side.

Who Can Slot In For Omar Marmoush At Manchester City?
Marmoush had seemingly taken up that left-wing role at Man City in the beginning of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. He started two of their first three matches, playing in that wide area and also providing an assist for Erling Haaland’s goal in the Cityzens’ 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break.
But this injury marks a major blow for the Egyptian forward, who has 12 goal contributions (eight goals, four assists) in 28 games for Manchester City since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2025 January transfer window.
Fortunately for Pep Guardiola, he actually has plenty of prominent options to replace Marmoush in that left-wing role after the Omar Marmoush injury. The energetic Jeremy Doku is the primary candidate to replace Marmoush, with the Belgian winger’s dribbling qualities and ability to create chances making him a standout option for that position.
Phil Foden can also play on the left wing if necessary. However, the absence of Marmoush is likely to be felt in the Man City frontline, with the Egyptian forward having the tendency to get at the end of chances and score some spectacular goals from unique positions.
