A 1-0 Manchester City win against Coventry City on Saturday, September 5, at the Etihad Stadium was their third consecutive win in the Premier League this season. The Cityzens have nine points in three matches this season, and Enzo Maresca should be reasonably happy after yet another Manchester City win.

Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the match, which was his third of the season, and Enzo Fernandez had a very good debut for the Cityzens and played an important part in the Manchester City win.

Manchester City Win Highlighted Correct Strategy And Proper Cohesion

The Manchester City win highlighted the triumph of their correct strategy and cohesion. After an initial 10-15 minutes, during which they struggled to break the Coventry City resistance and somehow managed not to concede a goal from a counter-attack, the Cityzens started using Enzo Fernandez properly.

Elliot Anderson stayed deep, and Fernandez started moving up and down the pitch. The 25-year-old Argentine moved to the right side of the pitch frequently and played passes to an onrushing Antoine Semenyo. He exchanged positions with Rayan Cherki at times, and the Fernandez-Cherki-Semenyo combination was very potent through the inside-right channel. Manchester City’s goal also came from such a move, when Fernandez played a forward pass to Semenyo, who went near the byline before delivering a perfect cross that was headed in by Haaland, and that was the goal that secured the Manchester City win in the end.

Anderson did the right thing by staying back and playing long passes at regular intervals. The good thing for Manchester City was that they played a lot of line-breaking passes that reached Haaland. The Norwegian should have scored on another occasion, but his shot was saved by the Coventry goalkeeper, Carl Rushworth.

However, the vulnerability against counter-attacks remained for the Cityzens despite Abdukodir Khusanov staying back in his own half most of the time. Anderson will have to take a key role in foiling the counter-attacks and will have to react more quickly once the Cityzens lose possession and the opposition threatens to break on a counter. The performance of Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Manchester City win against Coventry was another positive, as the big Italian came up with several important saves.

Manchester City Have Two Key Matches Coming Up

Manchester City will travel to FC Porto to play in their first UEFA Champions League match of the season this week. Then, they will face city rivals Manchester United in the Manchester derby next Sunday, September 13.

The Manchester City win against Coventry will give them much confidence ahead of those two potentially difficult fixtures. Maresca will have to make sure that there is no room for complacency in the squad. The Cityzens will aim to win multiple titles this season, including the Premier League that they last won in the 2023/24 season. The start to the season has been quite good, and it is now up to Maresca’s men to build on it. With the kind of squad they have, it is certainly within their reach to win multiple titles this season.
