The Manchester United form is quite terrible at the moment, and their latest loss came at the hands of Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano on Tuesday, October 13. Manchester United lost the UEFA Champions League fixture 2-0, which was not surprising at all given the current Manchester United form. The Red Devils currently have six points in six Premier League matches and are in the 13th position in the league table at the moment. Thus, the Manchester United form is putting a lot of pressure on Michael Carrick, the Manchester United manager.
Manchester United Form: Why They Simply Do Not Have A Good Enough Squad
The Manchester United form once again shows that their squad is simply not up to the mark against the big teams in Europe. Atletico have been far more successful in the UEFA Champions League than Manchester United in recent times, and their win was never in doubt against the Red Devils.
It has been discussed many times already, but one cannot help but reiterate that buying Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos in the summer transfer window is simply not good enough. United do not have a proper back-up for Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 role or a proper back-up striker for Benjamin Sesko. The likes of Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee play too infrequently for the club to make a serious impact on their performance.
Moreover, they do not have anyone to replace an injury-prone Luke Shaw with aside from Patrick Dorgu, who is himself injury-prone and inexperienced. They do not have a top-class defensive midfielder to partner Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the pitch. Both Tielemans and Santos have been quite ordinary for the Red Devils so far. Hence, their poor form should not come as a surprise to their supporters. The fact that they are having to play UEFA Champions League football with this squad only aggravates the situation.

Extra Time Notes
The Manchester United form should be ringing alarm bells for the club management. However, the club management have proven themselves to be quite thick-skinned in terms of facing criticism so far. Carrick’s reputation as a player and as a former player of the club might have gone a long way towards saving his job so far. One cannot help but wonder whether Ruben Amorim’s performance as a manager was better than what Carrick has managed this season so far.
Amorim had to deal with an error-prone Andre Onana in goal mostly, but Carrick has not done anything better this season with a better goalkeeper like Senne Lammens in goal. His team has looked neither solid in defence nor lethal in their attack. The Manchester United form has already given rise to speculation about someone like Antonio Conte taking up the manager’s job. Conte has six domestic league titles under his belt as a manager and has a much better CV than Carrick.
It remains to be seen whether the Italian comes and then performs a rescue act for the club. However, with the kind of squad they have, Manchester United should find it difficult to deal with the situation.
