In the Manchester United vs Liverpool clash yesterday afternoon, the Red Devils came out on top with a valuable win that has kept them in third place in the Premier League with 64 points from 35 matches.

After the victory at Old Trafford, it is almost certain now that United will finish inside the top three and play UEFA Champions League football next season.

Manchester United won the match 3-2, and the win could have been more emphatic had it not been for two costly errors that gave Liverpool a chance to come back into the match.

However, the Red Devils’ win in the Manchester United vs Liverpool clash was their 10th victory under Michael Carrick in 14 matches.

Manchester United vs Liverpool: Rapid Fire Two Goals Set The Red Devils On Their Way

The Manchester United win was a result of the wonderful 20 minutes or so during which they scored their first two goals.

The attacks mainly came through the right side of the pitch, with Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko combining repeatedly, as their attacks were formed through quick one-touch passes.

The ball was repeatedly played to Mbeumo on the right flank, and he wasted no time in playing the crosses quickly into the box. One of such crosses led to the corner that resulted in Manchester United’s first goal. Then, Sesko scored from a brisk counter-attack consisting of quick passes to put United 2-0 up.

The Manchester United vs Liverpool clash saw the Red Devils’ win look almost certain after the first half, but a couple of faulty passes from Amad Diallo and Senne Lammens led to the game being all square just before the hour mark.

It was an unexpected reprieve for Liverpool; however, the Reds did not look quite comfortable going forward. They primarily played short passes, but they were not played at the pace at which they should have been.

Kobbie Mainoo then scored the match-winner in the 77th minute with a shot from just outside the box to ensure the Manchester United vs Liverpool clash would end with a home win

Liverpool’s right-winger, Jeremie Frimpong, did not do much in the first half and improved his performance somewhat in the second, but one could not help but wonder whether Curtis Jones, Liverpool’s right-back for the game, should have played in Frimpong’s position and vice versa.

Manchester United vs Liverpool: The Michael Carrick Revolution

United have won 32 points in 14 matches under Carrick, which is the highest by any team during that period. Manchester City, who typically improve their performance after Christmas, have obtained 27 points during that time, albeit in two fewer matches.

The former Manchester United midfielder has certainly won the fans over as interim manager. His primary duty was to ensure UEFA Champions League qualification for his team for next season, which he appears to have done already.

Manchester United’s win against Liverpool means that they are six points ahead of their arch-rivals with three matches to go, which is a far cry from last season, as the Red Devils languished near the relegation zone whilst the Reds won the league.

However, an important thing to consider is that Manchester United have only played in the Premier League during Carrick’s tenure. They did not have any European football to bother about, which cannot be said about any other team in the top six this season.

United have played in a lot fewer matches this season, and that has definitely helped their purpose, as the players have been relatively fresh and managed to put their focus on Premier League football only.

That will not be the case when Manchester United plays UEFA Champions League football next season. However, as of now, the Manchester United win over Liverpool should be celebrated by their supporters.
